A New Beginning

(School Bell Rings)

God, another school... More people I can lie to.. Another place I can call my home for a few months.

I've mentally prepared myself for at least the past 200 years for all the "new kid" remarks I'll have to deal with for at least the first week or so. I don't really mind it. Not anymore at least, it's not like I'll be staying here for a while, anyway. I've been on the move for ... let's see, damn.. who knows anymore? Feels like a couple of centuries - maybe because it has been.

I go to look up, but it's too late. I crash into a pair of red heels and matching toe nails.

"Oh, excuse me! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bang into you.." I said. As I looked up I couldn't help but to just stare into her luminous, crystal, big blue eyes.

"I... um my name is Charlotte."

-she reaches out her hand for a shake.

Didn't think anyone still shook anymore. Impressive, I thought to myself.

I took her hand in mine and shook.

"You're new here, right ? Never seen you around."

"Yeah, I'm new here.." I mumble.

-The two girls standing to the side of her seemed to disappear for a moment , until one cleared her throat as to interrupt.

''Oh how rude of me! These are my friends Jessica and Abbi."

-They both gave me a smile and said "Heyy!"as if they were the same exact person. "Guys, this is... um... I'm sorry. I don't think you ever told me your name.."

"Skylar, My name is Skylar!" I responded.

Jessica and Abbi both smiled.

-"So, I think we're going to be late for English, Nice meeting you Skylar!" Jessica said.

"Hopefully we get to know each other some more, Maybe we'll have a class together or something!!" Abbi said while swinging her hair and scurrying down the hall with Jessica.

"we'll catch ya later Char!" Abbi screamed out playfully, turning around once more, Jessica tugging her along even faster.

-Charlotte laughed-

" You know, I could show you around if you want, I'm on the student council and its kind of like my duty! I could show you the ins and outs"- as a smile played out on her lips-

- Is everyone always this cheery about meeting new people ?

"That sounds wonderful, Thank you!"

"Can I see your schedule?" she asked, with her hands already compressed around my schedule.

Her eyes scanned the paper.

"Well, me and you have English aaaaand History together!" she handed back my schedule with the warmest smile on her face.

"Can I ask you a question, Skylar ? I don't mean to be rude or anything but isn't Skylar kind of a girls name? I Mean I may be sounding totally off but it was just a thought of mine!"

-I looked down at her "Yeah, it is "kind of " a girls name. You're "totally" right." She gave me that evil eye look and I couldn't help but laugh a little just thinking about what she was about to say.

"Your name is Skylar... ok, don't get me wrong it's a nice name!! " She paused for just a moment, then spoke again "I'm sorr-"

-l cut her off with this laughter that was louder than even I expected to come from me, being that I got asked this same question more than at least 206 times my whole life.

Charlotte was startled, I don't think she expected me to laugh at all about something she was so serious about.

-Looking down at Charlotte she looked up at me, with a confused apologetic look.

"Hey, Charlotte.. You know I am a girl..? If you haven't noticed which I mean I understand If you didn't."

"I.. I'm so sorry, Skylar. I didn't mean it like that. I'm really dumb for even opening my mouth.. I let my curio.."

"Don't worry about it, Charlotte" It really isn't a big deal, believe me, I've heard worse" I said with a smile and Charlotte seemed to ease up at that.

" I'm sorry you have to deal with that kind of stuff all the time, at least I'm not the first person to say it.. Right?" she chuckled.

-I looked away quickly "Its okay, I can handle it." I smiled to myself , I meant that.

"Ya know If anyone gives you trouble come find me" she laughed and touched my arm lightly. "You know I'm on the student council and that gives me the opportunity to get them in serious trouble" waving her finger all over the place.

-Laughing, I said " ok you got it council master, I definitely will let you know when I need your help to catch me some bullies! " I said sarcastically.

She seemed to really fancy my humor.

"You know I only assumed you were a guy because of your clothes, you have the whole "rugged biker bad ass" look going on. It's hard to tell, you might get that a lot today, just a warning. It's a small town and it's rare you find someone that doesn't look "the part" if you know what I mean, but nothing wrong with that.. Maybe it's time we see change." She smiled softly.

"Ha, I understand what you mean about fitting "the part", let's just say I'm quite happy about that!"

"Ha-ha very funny, but hey, watch it - I love how my town looks! Well this is your stop... "Literature." " She said in an eerie voice, stopping in front of a class room towards the end of the hallway.

"Thank you so much, Charlotte. I will be looking forward to seeing you in History and English!"

"Yeah, it was a pleasure. I'll see you around, Skylar. "
