Chapter 7

Natalie

To say that the night of warped tour was interesting would be the understatement of the century. It started out so much fun. We got there just in Time for asking Alexandria to preform, and Devon promised to drink a beer with me. Just one.

I should've never made him do it. We drank during black veil bride's set, and after, Devon said he had to go to the bathroom. I didn't have to go, so I told him I'd save our seats on the lawn. He came back twenty minutes later, I figured it was because the lawn was faraway from the restrooms.

It wasn't.

Sleeping with sirens came out after the set break, and Devon started acting weird. He said, "dance with me! And started swinging my arms around. I thought it was funny until I realized he wasn't swinging to the music.

"Devon? Are you alright?"

" Oh, I'm fanfuckingtastic! " We stopped dancing, and his eyes rolled backwards. He passed out in my direction. . I caught him, kind of. I wasn't very strong. He came to immeadiately, so I knew he was gonna be okay. I did it all the time. But I was confused. "Devon. Devon. Hey. Did you get more to drink?"

"Mhmm." He raised his eyebrows and licked his lips. I would probably think that was pretty sexy if he wasn't dying.

"Okay. I'm gonna call the medics and just make sure you're okay."

"No! Natalie!" He's screaming like I fell off a cliff. "You can't!"

"Why not?"

"I didnt call the cops on you."

"I'm not calling the cops! Just the medic."

"No. Please don't!"

"Okay..." I guessed he would be alright for now. "But you've gotta walk outta here."

"He stood up instantly, but then took hold of my arm and started leaning. "Okay. We're gonna be fine, okay? Let's go home."

"But I wanna hear the concert!"

"I think it would be better if we went home."

"Okay. Now where are my keys?" He grabs them from his back pocket and starts approaching the parking lot,

"You think you're driving?"

"Of course."

"Fuck no, dude. Come on."

"No!" He's one of those fighting drunks.

"Come on." I rip the keys from his hands.

"Bitch." He doesn't mean it, and it still hurts. "I wanted to drive."

"You'll thank me later. Wanna lay down in the back?"

"Surewhatever" he says, the words slur together.

"Okay, cool."

Its an hour and a half drive to get back to Devon's apartment. I take a look at his car. I've never driven before. I didn't have a lisence. I walked everywhere. But whose a better driver right now? Me. I'm sure of it. I just gotta make sure I don't get caught. It's mostly highway, anyway. We start to drive out of the parking lot. So far so good. After a couple minutes i felt confident enough to ask Devon.

"So, what the hell just happened?"

"I'm allergic to alcohol."

"You are?"

"Uhhuhhh. I haven't had it in so lingo forgotted how awesome it is. So I pretended I was getting another one for me and you, and then I drinked them."

Oh. He's not allergic to alcohol, he's addicted to alcohol.

In the rear view mirror I saw a cop behind me. "Don't panic," I thought out loud,

" don't panic don't panic."

"Wha? "

Devon sat up and then. Threw up all over the backseat.

"Oh my god oh my god. Devon. Get down!"

"Why?"

"I'm gonna change lanes and let the cop pass me."

"The cop's got me?"

"No,honey. You're fine." I make sure to put my signal on and change lanes.

I look forward. Drivers have to keep their eyes on the road. That's a law, right? Oh shit. He passes me with no issues. Thank god. I get us all the way to Devon's parking garage without crashing. Or throwing up.

"We gotta clean your car, Devon."

"Right now?"

"No.." I decide. "We gotta get inside first."

" Okay."

He says. It's probably 9 o'clock. I don't have to be at cello practice until noon. I rented out a practice room until 5, because my jury is on Friday. I'm not worried at all. Just gotta practice as much as I can, and I'll be fine. I'll stay here tonight to make sure Devon is okay.

"Now we're even," I tell him, helping him get to the inside of the apartment.

"Hmm?"

" Oh, you'll remember. Alcohols scary, huh?"

" It's fanfuckigtastic."

"Nah."

The key to his apartment Is in the same ring as the key to his car. I make it in easily. "Okay..." I tell him.

"This time, you're gonna sleep on the bed and I'm gonna sleep on the couch. Here."

I grab the same bowl he gave me the week before.

"Thankyouu", he says.

"Why don't you try to get some sleep? I'll still be here when you wake up."

"Okay."

He slumps down over the bed, and I tell him, "good night, Devon."

I try to tell myself he has no idea what he's saying, and will my heart to stop doing backflips.

Aware or not, it's clear as day. He says, "goodnight, Natalie. I love you."
