She dragged her daughter harshly by her arm, a little baby crying in the mother her other arm. Loud explosion in the background of grenades and guns being fired. The mother hurried across the empty streets looking for shelter. Suddenly she was blown upwards and let go of her daughter not to fall on top of her baby. The mother cried out in pain from the gunshot wound to her shoulder. soon soldiers came sprinting towards them. yelling at each other, too far away to hear. a pool of blood arose under the mother's wound."Run," she said to the little girl, "take your little brother with you and hide." The little girl stood frightened as the soldiers came closer and closer. "RUN SKAEYA RUN AND DON'T LOOK BACK!" the mother yelled, causing the seven-year-old girl to turn and run with her baby brother in her arms, holding on thightly to him.
Buildings surrounded her that had collapsed, windows smashed, wooden planks covering entrances. The girl ran into an alley and sat behind a trash can. She put her little brother on her lap and rocked him back and forth until he calmed down. She looked around the alley. trash cans were all over the floor, rubbish scattered all over the place. "I think she went this way," a strange voice called out. skaeya held her breath in a huddle against the rubbish to avoid being heard. Footsteps passed by but didn't stop. It took a moment before the girl dared to exhale. she sat for a minute longer just to be sure before getting up and going off all alone without her mother just her 2 year old little brother to keep her company.
She walked on the sidewalk by the side of the road as she had learned before war broke out. tall houses to her left and the empty road to her right. it was dead quiet, no gunshots being fired or bombs detonating. the sun was beginning to set but the little girl kept walking even though her feet ached from walking and her arms began to hurt from carrying her brother. she already saw the edge of the city and quickened her pace. the crushed farmland before her lay filled with barbed wire.
she walked through the agricultural meadows. barbed wire scraped her legs. she looked back at the city where she was born, where the king and his family lived in, in the great palace where her mother also worked in as a cleaner. the beautiful palace made of white stone with gold incorporated and its giant gates. there was nothing left to see. she could just see a tower of the palace in the distance. Half broken down.
A last glimpse of her hometown now completely destroyed.
