Answers. About ten minutes after Amaya hung up with Itanya, a tall, very handsome man with salt and pepper hair, who looked to be in his mid to late fifties walked into the lobby and requested the Wright family. The three women quickly approached and he asked them to follow him.
Once they were in the small conference room with the door closed, he said, "I'm Dr. Cade Solomon, and I am a cardiothoracic surgeon. Dr. Divine asked me to – "
"You spoke to Chalk?" Amaya interrupted.
"Yes, and just to put your mind at ease, I trained him. He did his internship under my tutelage and he and I have worked very closely on some extremely difficult cases over the years. I only recently moved my practice to The Woodlands, so we don't work together as often anymore, but we consult with each other on a regular basis. Now, since time is of the essence, Chalk asked me to look in on Cameron and get started." He opened the door and called for someone. A moment later, a lady, presumably his nurse, came in with a stack of papers in her hand and asked for Mrs. Wright. Ti identified herself, and they left the room and went to the front desk. Dr. Solomon walked out, then peeked his head back in the door.
"Which one of you is Amaya?" he asked, with a smile.
"I am," she answered, softly.
"Dr. Divine said to tell you not to worry and that he is on his way."
Chapter 112
Texts. Amaya and Nika stayed in the conference room offering prayers to Jehovah Rapha for Cameron, until hospital staff knocked on the door and said they needed the room. The women went to the family waiting area and were soon joined by Ti. They sat in agonizing silence waiting for news about their loved one.
Nika left and returned with three cups of Starbucks coffee. Amaya set her purse on the floor so she could safely add more sugar to her latte, and her phone vibrated with a text. The sender was Chalk and the message was simple: I'm here. She shared the news with Ti and Nika, and the three of them rejoiced together.
Amaya, doing her best to be strong, was reciting the twenty-third psalm in her head when a familiar person walked into the waiting area.
"Hi Saffron," Amaya said and stood to hug her neck.
"Hi," Saffron returned, as they embraced. "Chalk and I were leaving the airport when Itanya called. Our plane had landed just minutes before, so he was probably in the air when you tried to reach him."
Coming back from Dallas, no doubt, Amaya thought, but quickly dismissed it and decided to be grateful they were there. "I'm just so glad he could make it."
"Me too," Saffron mumbled and took a seat on the other side of the room.
With all Amaya had on her mind, she was not about to try and figure that one out. But Chalk's sister was hard to read. She always seemed so serious, yet, since the demise of her and Chalk's relationship, they had talked a few times and Saffron was always pleasant. So, I'm not sure what that's all about.
A few moments after she had that thought, Amaya's phone vibrated with another text. This time the sender was Saffron and the message sent a cold chill down her spine:
Please don't take it personal that I sat over here, but one of your friends is a snake. And I HATE snakes.
Chapter 113
Hearts. After what seemed like eons but was actually only a few hours, Dr. Divine and Dr. Solomon sent for the family. Chalk formally greeted them, then got right down to business. He looked into their anxious faces and cleared his throat.
