The Blue Dream

I like to wake up gradually, hear the birds scrabbling at the skylight outside my window facing the stairs and feel the dim light creep into my room. This morning was different than those good old foggy mornings where you can see your breath in front of your face even in the summer and the kitchen floor makes your toes curl up in protest.

Thinking that it would be another boring school day where I would have to get out of the bed and dress in clothes I had laid out the night before and tiptoe out before my little sister woke up, I didn’t bother getting up right away.

The moment I opened my eyes it was… different. I sat on my elbow and rubbed the sleepiness from my eyes thinking that the weak light had made things different. But that didn’t help what I saw.

Unfolding my round dark rimmed glasses, I put them on and stared around again. My room was blue. Everything was blue; the dresser, the door, the old pink carpet was blue and even my panda plushie! I must be dreaming!

I fell out of bed and bumped my knee. “Ouch!” I stifled my cry by biting my lip. My messy brown hair fell over my glasses. Shaking my head to remove the blue hair, I shuffled over to my dresser. Wait, blue hair? Moving over to the small hand mirror given to me from my mom, I stared at my reflection.

I was blue too! Everything in this room was blue even me! Hoping over the creaks in the blue carpeted floor, I stared at my sister sleeping in her bed. She, including her many Dalmatian puppy plushies she liked to surround herself with were also varying shades of blue.

This is so strange I though staring at her from my seat on my blue covered bed. My red tartan pajamas were no longer red but now a blue tartan and I was thinking about what was happening.

Deciding I was hungry for some of the new cereal my mom had bought us, I dress in my blue pants, light blue socks and my royal blue t-shirt for school and went to open the bedroom door.

My dad always leaves early for work and sometimes I’m lucky enough to wake up early and hear him leave. His and my mom’s bedroom door was half open as I peeked out into the surprisingly orange hallway.

My door was orange on the outside but inside it was still blue. This is really strange, I thought staring at the peach colored door frames. The hallway closet where we kept the vacuum cleaner and our many board games was a pumpkin orange as were the door to the downstairs and the bathroom door.

I could see inside my parents’ room only a little, but it was enough to see the sand colored bed and striped throw rugs. So they have the sandy colored room and me and my sister have the blue room… I thought that my brother in the middle room would have a green colored room. I leaned over and cracked his door open a little and to my surprise his room was yellow.

His Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle poster tacked to the wall was completely in shades of yellow, the dresser where he kept two drawers of socks and other clothes was a mustard color and his much nicer blue carpet was no longer that color but a ripe shade of lemon.

Gasping loudly, I was relieved that he was a heavy sleeper and only an earthquake could get him out of bed. Gently closing the door, I darted down the hall mindful of the many creaks littered beneath the pale vermillion carpet.

I slipped into the bathroom and fumbled for the light switch as it was still dark and the skylight above wasn’t filtering enough light.

“Whoa!” I whispered staring at the bathroom sink, it was a silvery gray color. Even the toilet and bath tub were gray colored. The walls that were a cream yellow were instead a frosty gray color. I wonder what color the kitchen was I thought as I washed my face and used the toilet. I giggled as I lifted the lid, the water inside was silvery just like mercury.

I stepped out into the hall and stretched before wandering over the to the kitchen for breakfast. The kitchen was purple.

Lavender, violet, a pretty indigo and even grape! The colors looked so edible that I didn’t hear my mom shuffling down the hall.

“Wake up. Time to get ready for school!” I heard my mom tapping on the door. “What? I am awake! I’m in the kitchen!” I said back to her and felt confused. She did see me standing in the door way of the kitchen didn’t she? I stepped back into the hall and was wondering why she said that. “Come on, you have to get up!”

I twitched my nose and sniffed as though I smelt something bad. “Okay! I’m up!” I mumbled into my pillow. Wait. I thought I was in the kitchen getting breakfast? Sitting upright, my hair fell in my face, and I looked around my room.

It wasn’t blue, in fact it was the way it always looked, my side slightly messy and my sister’s full of her Dalmatian plushies and even messier. “A strange morning!” I stumbled out of bed and reached for my clothing I had thought I had put on.

Pulling my jeans and reaching for my socks, I hit my knee with my elbow, “Ow…!” I said rubbing my knee.

Rolling back my jeans, I saw that I had a small bruise. “When did I get this?” I wondered as I looked around my side of the room.

There wasn’t anything I could hit it on and I wasn’t a sleepwalker. Shrugging finished getting dressed and went to get the new cereal before my brother ripped into it.

I had a bruise I didn’t have the night before. Was it a dream or not?
