Whispers From the Dead

Prologue - "Sleep is Deadly"

A loud scream pierced the air as Layla jolted awake. Her heart pounded and a panicked look overcame her face as the jumped up from her slept in bed.

Franticly running around the room, she packed up all the clothing she could shove into one backpack.

Running down the steps two at a time she made her way over to the large kitchen that knew only her.

Her parents bought the house new, but they never even lived in it.

As soon as they got Layla settled in, they left.

They were always away from Layla. Workaholics, I guess you could call them. They owned their own company which helped people in struggling countries. Their work was extremely well known and appreciated.

The money kept on rolling in so they made sure Layla was comfortable. But they didn't care for her enough to actually stand to be in the same room as her.

They couldn't stand their insane daughter. But poor Layla couldn't change anything about that. It wasn't her fault that she could see them.

Every week, they sent in Layla's aunt to check on her.

But it wasn't enough.

Layla still lived alone, still cared for herself. Layla was still broken, living in a broken home.

But as it seems, Layla didn't plan on staying in that god forsaken house all alone for much longer.

She packed up about three days worth of food and stuffed her cell phone and charger into her pocket. Pulling on her thick grey hooded jacket she snatched up her keys and ran out the door.

She jumped into her rusty red Honda and started driving.

She didn't know or care where she was going, she just wanted to go. She needed to get out of there.

Layla was just too tired though, she hadn't even slept one hour the night before.

She didn't want to sleep. She was vulnerable in her sleep. They could get her in her sleep.

Layla desperatly needed sleep. She could already feel her eyelids drooping and she knew that of she didn't get some shut eye things could get crazy.

But she couldn't pull over, she had to keep moving.

She denied the need and just tried to ignore it.

Her attempts were feeble though, she succumbed to the darkness not five minutes later.

But before she could go, she managed to whisper the words "they're here now".

And hen she fell asleep.

Right in the middle of the road.
