Prologue
Long ago, there were five great kingdoms each named after one precious stone, and they lived together in harmony. Until one awful night, the great obsidian palace had fallen under a horrible curse. Fiends created of shadow and cinder, awoke from the deepest parts of the earth and wreaked havoc on the inhabitants of the kingdom. These vicious creatures of darkness are called shades. They are night dwelling monsters with corrupted souls and they have the ability to turn people into shades with a single bite. After only a few nights, many people have lost their homes and lives, numerous towns were demolished and the great obsidian palace has been turned into an empty ghost town. Soon the news of this cataclysmic event started spreading throughout the lands and into the other kingdoms, which frightened the rulers to their core. There was nowhere to run or hide, they had to act fast. Since the great calamity, the four other kingdoms decided to create a system to protect themselves from these beasts. Soon enough, the "Kingdoms against the shadows", Also known as "K.A.T.S", was established. This organization recruits talented mages to become protectors of the kingdoms; they are soon titled as the royal guard or also knights. They have bright star-shaped souls and the brighter it shines, the stronger the mage gets. And with their powerful soul, they can defeat anything.
Chapter 1
The warm rays of the sun shines on to the Sunstone kingdom, basking the citizens of the kingdom in its glory. The light of the morning sunrise seeps through the window of an old attic, the warm light hits the soft covers of a small bed, waking the person who was sleeping under the sheet.
(The Attic)
Soon enough, an alarm clock rings loudly from the top of the nightstand, the person groans and stretches their arm out to hit the alarm clock. They miss the clock by an inch, but then relocate their hand back to the clock and smacks it with a bit more force. The alarm shuts off, there is a moment of silence. Then a few minutes later, the person sits up and scratches their white fluffy hair. They stare at their room and realize what day it is, they look over to their calendar for confirmation. Today is the Sunstone knights entrance exam! They quickly get off their bed and go to their wardrobe to grab some clothes for the day. They go through the door's star patterned drapes. Then they open the trapdoor on the floor to go downstairs.
They rush anxiously to the bathroom with their clothes in hand. They quickly put them on the shelf and start their morning routine. They use the toilet, wash their hands and face, put on their clothes and brush their teeth.
They then stand in front of the mirror to make sure that everything is in the right place. Looking at their reflection, they have long black antennas, black scaleras and black pants. Their irises are yellow just like their hoodie, and their small bug-like wings are as white as snow with a touch of gold on them, popping out of their sweater. They are a mothling.
They stare at themself for a bit, contemplating if they should try testing out their magic before the entrance exam. They take out their right hand to look at it and hold their wrist with their left hand for stability. They take a deep breath, then they close their eyes and whisper a spell under their breath. Their right hand starts to warm up very quickly and a small orange flame lights up in the palm of their hand. They take a peek at their hand and then they are filled with excitement, they are happy that it's working properly. But then, the spell started to spew up like a firework, growing unstable. In a panic, the mothling opens the tap of the sink and quickly puts their hand under the water, extinguishing the flame. They release a sigh of relief... They seem glad they didn't burn down the bathroom. Then they hear their father calling out for them.
"Jex! It's time for breakfast!" Spencer shouted.
Jexine jumps a bit and replies back to their father.
"I'm coming!"
Jexine quickly ran out of the bathroom and started heading to the kitchen.
He is a very tall man, about seven feet tall, with dark brown hair and tan skin. He has four arms and the lower ones are slightly smaller than the pair on top. His arms also have light orange stripe markings on them, resembling those of a jumping spider. Spencer turns around and looks at Jex with his four orange eyes, he is holding a plate of pancakes.
"Oh! Good morning firefly, I just finished making pancakes. Would you like some?" He smiles softly at them.
Jex nods in agreement and happily takes a stool to grab two plates from the cupboard. The kitchen is much bigger that a regular one, so is the rest of the house, it was designed for big arachnid monsters like Spencer. The counter comes up to Jexine's chest and the chairs are much higher. As Jex puts the two plates on the dining table, they then grab a few forks from the cutlery drawer. They climb on the tall chair and take a seat, then they reach over the table with their fork to grab a pancake from the serving plate. Spencer takes off his apron and hangs it on the wall next to the sink. Afterwards, he approaches the dining table and takes a seat next to the little mothling. They seem pleased with the soft pancakes and the sweet syrup. He takes the other fork and plate then grabs a few pancakes for himself. While eating, Jexine's antennas perk up. They swallow their food before speaking.
"Hey papa, where is dad? Shouldn't he be back from his night patrol by now?" They tilt their head to the side.
"Don't worry Jex, he is probably preparing papers for the new knight recruits, since today is the entrance exam. Say love, don't you have to go to that event?" he ask them curiously.
