DAY TEN

It’s been three days since I wrote anything. Well not that nothing
interesting happened. Anyway I have been too busy because of school! Once Yaxuan came back everything was back to normal so we had to make up for the lessons we ignored when Yaxuan was incarcerated.

Some of the teachers were so bitter about it that they announced tests out of nowhere. As expected Yaxuan was top of the class for all tests and they.gave us a scolding on how someone who was in a cell with no books could outdo us that much.

It was supposed to be an ordinary day until we were called in the assembly hall. Before the principal and the teachers came to address us, everyone was trying to guess what the agenda was. Some said it was about the books we lost in the fire, others said they were probably going to tell us that our protests have been banned. Ningning and I simply listened to all these ideas without giving any remark.

The principal and the teachers were finally sitting in front of all of us. The principal got a nod of proceeding from the teachers and came forward. We were all quiet.

‘’Students of Malcolm high school’’, he took out an envelope from his jacket, ‘’we received this two days ago but we did not disclose it because were were still discussing whether to accept or reject this proposal’’. We were eager to know what was in the envelope. ‘’This is a letter from the federation’’, he gazed.at Yaxuan, ‘’this letter is offering our very own Song Yaxuan a scholarship to study at Braxton high school as a step in ending segregation in education’’.

The entire assembly hall was in an uproar. The principal tried to clap for silence but it was of no use. Ningning stood on her seat and spoke over everyone (her voice was loud and commanding) ‘’there was no need to discuss that letter! They want to send Yaxuan right into the lion’s den so
they can get rid of him!’’. Her remark was met by cheers from the rest of the students.

‘’Order!’’, the principal clapped for silence, ‘’according to the letter, they chose Yaxuan for the exercise because he’s the smartest student in this school, there’s no need for discussion on that. We all know that’s true’’.

Yaowen raised a fist, ‘’It sounds like a trap!’’, he roared, ‘’Yaxuan took the fall for torching their school and he pommelled the braxton boys! He was even arrested! Why would they give a person with such a threatening reputation a scholarship at their school?!’’.

‘’to tame him’’, I actually heard my voice echo in the hall. I did not plan on being heard, it was just that my schoolmates were quiet at the wrong time.

The teachers and the students all gave me their attention, they were actually listening to me.

‘’Go on!’’, Ningning elbowed me to continue speaking.

‘’I mean…’’, I cleared my throat, ‘’it would be too overt to enrol him at their school then something terrible happens to him’’, I gained the confidence to stand, ‘’they have realised his influence and strength, so they are trying to keep him in check. Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter, by taking him him away from us and having him under their
nose, they’re killing two birds with one stone’’.

Everyone murmured in agreement to what I had said. Ningning actually got
on her feet and applauded me.

‘’Although that may be true’’, Mrs. Fan stepped forward, ‘’if he rejects this opportunity it would mean he is rejecting the equality that we have been fighting for’’. The entire hall was quiet. ‘’this may be a trap’’, Mrs. Fan smiled at Yaxuan, ‘’but it is also an opportunity to show that we are no different from them. Yaxuan, if you excel in their own territory, you will be representing the potential of every underprivileged student in this country…and I know you can do it, I believe in you Yaxuan’’.

-

‘’These people are so unbelievable!’’, Ningning barked, ‘’Braxton high school is being repaired after days of damage and we’re still learning in an old building with furniture that is almost thirty years old!’’.

We packed our books and walked out of our classroom. I saw Yaxuan walking by with his friends and sighed. I was very sad that he would no longer be schooling with us.

‘’What are you so worried about?’’, Ningning slapped my back, ‘’it’s not
like Yaxuan is moving someplace far, he’s still living in the same neighbourhood…we just won’t see him in school anymore’’.

That did not cheer me up.

‘’Are you worried that he can actually be ‘tamed’? No way’’, Ningning shook her head, ‘’Yaxuan is passionate for rights! He would never abandon this cause’’.

I slightly smiled. Was that really what I was sad about? Or was I sad that I would no longer see him everyday? What would life be like for Lester at Braxton high school? Well he would not leave immediately, he would continue to learn us with for at least a week because Braxton high school was still being repaired.

-

That afternoon after school, my mother had written me a list of groceries to buy for her. I had to leave my neighbourhood and go the main street because some of the items on the list were not sold in the neighbourhood. I browsed through a grocery store with my shopping basket swinging over my arm.

I placed my basket on the floor as a compared the prices of the medium sized bar of butter and large sized bar. I finally decided on the large size despite my mother’s instructions to buy the medium bar because the difference in the prices was so small. Before I could put the put the bar in my basket, someone tripped over it. The basket tipped over and the groceries rolled all over the floor of the grocery store. The eggs were all cracked and the jam jar was smashed. It was a mess.

I ignored all that and helped the girl who had tripped get back on her feet. She was a pretty girl beautifully black hair with sparkling dark eyes. I got so scared! She was obviously a rich kid.

‘’I’m sorry! So sorry’’, I apologised.

‘’What are you apologising for?’’, the girl dusted her dress, ‘’I’m the one who tripped over your basket. It’s all my fault’’, she looked at the floor, ‘’Oh no look what I did’’, she whined, ‘’I’ll pay for it okay?’’.

I was surprised. She was actually apologising. She was actually offering
to pay for the damaged groceries.

‘’You seem to be my age’’, she flashed a friendly smile, ‘’my name is
Eunchae, Hong Eunchae’’, she offered her hand.

Hong Eunchae! So this was Hong Eunchae! The famous beauty of Braxton high school! She refunded me for the damaged groceries and even offered to help the store janitor clean the stains on the floor. I was completely in awe, in every aspect she was like princess Snow White from Disney’s movie, pretty, kind and well mannered. I wish ‘they’ could all be like her.

‘’Excuse me’’, I followed her out the store.

‘’Yes?’’, she smiled.

‘’I know you learn at Braxton high school’’, I looked down at my feet, ‘’well since you’re so kind, could you be this kind to Yaxuan too? He’ll be all alone’’.

‘’Who’s Yaxuan?’’.

‘’A schoolmate of mine, he’ll join you soon’’.
