It was a beautiful day. The sun was out, no cloud in the sky. It was absolutely breathtaking. This is the view that many dream of waking up to.
It was my senior year of high school, and I had been accepted to Stanford University on a full scholarship. I was on my way to be the only member of my family to graduate college with a masters degree. It filled me with happiness knowing that in about two months, I would be free of high school and break these chains that have been preventing me from leaving my hometown of Berlin. Not Berlin, Germany. More like Berlin, Maryland, United States.
Just ten minutes from Ocean City, Berlin was part of the Burley Plantation, a 300-acre land grant from 1677. Since then, it has been cultivated into a tourist hot spot with tree-lined streets, historic homes, and local businesses. My favorite movie, Tuck Everlasting, was also shot there. I happened to be walking down the street one day and unknowingly ran into Ben Kingsley, who played the Man in the Yellow Suit in the movie.
Today was supposed to be like any other day, until it wasn't. Today was the day I was going to have to fight for my life if I wanted to get out alive.
