Yes, I know I haven't uploaded anything for Stuck Between the Pages, but this is something I'm working on for class. Let me know what you all think

Chapter One

“I’m getting married!” Lucy said, thrusting her hand in Savannah’s face. She had to speak over the chatter of the restaurant.

Savannah leaned back and examined the ring. The center diamond was fairly large and smaller diamonds surrounded it. It fit nicely on Lucy’s finger, the ring Savannah knew her best friend had always wanted.

“That’s great,” Savannah said, faking a smile so hard her cheeks hurt. “It’s a beautiful ring.”

She wanted to muster up some more excitement. This was the day that Lucy had been waiting for since they were little girls. And, Calvin was a great guy. Only he could handle Lucy’s dramatic flares after a long day at work.

“Thanks,” Lucy said. She settled back down in her chair and looked down at her ring, doing a small dance in her chair. “I’m super excited. It was the most romantic proposal.”

“Oh?” Savannah asked, picking up her menu. “How’d he do it?”

“Well, we went on a picnic,” Lucy said, resting her elbows on the table and putting her chin in her hands. She had a far-off look and a smile that wouldn’t fade. “After dinner, which I’m sure his sister helped him make, we spent some time talking and watching the stars. Then, he asked me to look for something. When I turned back around to tell him I couldn’t find it, he was on his knee.”

Lucy picked up her menu and began flipping through it.

“His hands shook and oh, Savannah, he could barely get the words out. He told me all about how much he loved me and that he knew when he first met me that I was the one.”

“Aw,” Savannah said, truly smiling as she pictured the scene.

“And then he dropped the ring and couldn’t find it,” Lucy continued. “Finally, though, he recovered it and put it on my finger.”

She looked at the ring again and so did Savannah. The soft lighting of the restaurant smoothed the edges. Reflecting across the diamond were pinks and pale oranges. Then, she looked to her menu, biting the inside of her lip as she waited for Lucy to bring him up.

“So,” Lucy said, calming down a little.

Savannah wanted to vanish, to get up and run out of the restaurant. But, that would have been rude and her black heels weren’t the best for running in.

“Don’t,” Savannah said, glancing up at her friend and meeting her eyes. “Let’s enjoy that you’re getting married to an amazing man without bringing up the past.”

Lucy sighed heavily. “We’re going to have to talk about him because he’ll be here in a few days and he’s Calvin’s good friend.”

“I know,” Savannah said, her words clipped. “Please, not tonight, Lucy.”

“Fine, fine,” Lucy said, holding up her hands in defeat. “You win. Tonight. But, don’t think we won’t be discussing him.”

“You were never one to let things go,” Savannah said.

“Damn right,” Lucy said. Then, she frowned. “Poor Calvin. I’m not sure if he knows what he’s gotten himself into.”

     Savannah smiled. “He loves you.”
