I just started my junior year of high school today. My dad was supposed to take me to school this morning, but he got called in for an emergency surgery. My first day of junior year started with a post-it on the fridge *Good luck today, Tay! I'm sorry I couldn't drop you off, hopefully I'll be home early tonight. I love you, Dad* My day didn't get better at school. My first class was anatomy, and when my teacher called role she immediately recognized my name and proceeded to tell the class all about my dad and Meredith. Then the girls in the class gushed to me about how attractive he is. Now I know I'm going to be expected to do insanely well in this class because, "it's in my blood." I was just in a bad mood for the rest of the day and I couldn't wait to get home.
When I got home, Meredith was there. I had a feeling that meant he had more surgeries holding him up.
"How was your first day?"
"Long...."
"I know you were hoping your dad was going to take you, he was pretty upset that he couldn't."
"You know, everyone knows you two?"
"People at school bother you about us?"
"People tell me he's hot or you're hot sometimes, but today my anatomy class couldn't stop talking about you two. My teacher just assumed that I'm great at anatomy. I only know the little bit I hear you guys talk about. If I don't do good in that class, no one will ever let me live it down."
"Just do your best. I know everyone says that, but it applies here. Don't make yourself miserable trying to be the best student in that class and don't ignore all of your other classes to focus on that one. Obviously, you don't need to fail, but you aren't going to get in trouble here for not making a perfect grade."
"I have a test tomorrow over all of the organs and their locations. That seems like so much to memorize in one night."
"I have an anatomical model, Anatomy Jane. I can get it and help you study until Derek gets home, if you want."
"Please!"
She went to the den and came back with a pretty old anatomical model that essentially looked like a dark-haired Barbie with removable organs.
"When I was little, I made up names for each organ because I couldn't remember the actual names." She took all of the organs out and told me the actual names. Then she told me her made up names. We were both laughing hysterically as she quizzed me and I explained to her where the, "Twash," went. I was actually having fun doing something as obnoxious as studying. Maybe my dad being engaged wasn't so difficult after all!
