A shadow covered over the merky waters that danced around the rocks the figure was perched on. Below the water was a catfish slowly stalking some of its own prey. As it slowly stalked closer to what it wanted to fill it's belly with a clawed hand reached in to grab it swiftly, but luckily for the catfish it was able to easily slip away

" Damn it!" Carlia shouts as she slams her now wet hands on the rocks.

Her almost prestige white fur reflects the final colors of the sunset allowing the fish below to see her while she moves making them all swim off in fear. She held defeat in her eyes as she watched the fish flee. The loss of this meal made her tall ears flop down to either side of her head.

Carlia stands up from her stone perch and screams out into the dying light of the day

" One! I just needed to catch one! Why must you be so cruel to me!" Her pale pink nose turned red from the pressure of her screaming.  " Why must we go hungry for another night!"

As she screamed and ranted at the fleeting sun she slipped from atop of her stone falling into the water. She gets up panting and growling her fur now soaked . She stood  back up and rubbed her face as she groaned. Her legs hurt, her stomach screamed with hunger, and now she was soaked to the bone by freezing cold water.

" Carlia?" A soft voice came from behind the young woman.

Carlia turned around to see her smaller sister clinging to an old faceless doll her mother had made her some years ago

" Moud? Why are you out this far from the house?" Carlia asked worried. She walked back to the shore with her arms raised so she didn't get any more wet " did you finish foraging sweetheart?"
" Yeah.. I found some wild sweet potatoes and onion grass so we can have snacks or something to make whatever you caught taste better" her sister smiles swaying a little
" Oh sweety that's wonderful.. but I didn't catch anything this time.. it's the last pot of potted meat tonight it seems." Carlia pets her sisters head." But I think we have everything to make bread. We can use the onion grass for that and make a very tasty bread"

Moud nods and jumps a little getting excited. She started to run back to the hut without her sister. Carlia sighs watching her sister as she follows, walking. She felt disappointed she couldn't get her sister a proper meal prepared instead of using up the last of their emergency rations.

A small scream comes from up ahead the moment Moud entered their run down hut. The scream pushed Carlia to rush to their home. She bursted her way into the room and gasped seeing a rather large snake slithering slowly closer to her, she looked around seeing Moud on a table shivering next to their fathers old hunting rifle. She didn't know if it still worked but it was her one hope.

Carlia jumped up onto the table grabbing the gun aiming it at the snake. She panted some and pulled the trigger to kill the snake only to have the lever to pop off in her fingers. Neither her or her sister knew how to prevent age from eating away the weapon.

She looked up to see the trigger on the table at her feet then looked back up to see the snake getting ready to strike. As the slithering beast lunged at them the two both screamed while Carlia swings the busted gun making the creature hiss out loudly

Moud having been hit as well fell back, catching the shelf above her making it fall with her and causing a rain of hand made cooking blades clattering down onto the floor one pinning the snake to the floor.

" Shit! Oh Serith you got it!" Carlia cheered

She looked back and saw her sister on the floor, dazed. She reached down to help Moud up off the floor seeing a bruise was already forming under her fur

" Oh I'm sorry sweetie.. but hey good news we have dinner!"  Carlia wanted her sister to see the silver lining

She walked over to finish off the snake cutting its head off and lifting the snake off the ground

" See! I can make us grilled snake or a stew with this!" She smiled and walked over to Moud. " I'll get you something cold for your head. I'm very sorry I hurt you.. my apology will be making you a new back pack from this snake's skin, Alright?

Her little sister nods and walks over to hug her. They had survived yet another day with out their parents. It was growing harder over time and the two kept finding themselves in dangerous situations on a constant now. Both worried about which day would be their last, sadly this one was not the closest they have come

" I want to leave " Moud sounded sad as she watched Carlia prepare their meal
" I know.. I do to.. " her older sister answered sounding sad aswell

The two fell silent. The only sound being the crackling of the fireplace and the knife chopping through the meat. A soft breeze flows through the window adding a light whistle and a cold breeze to their small one room hut

" When do you think there coming back?" Moud asked again while she cleaned
" I don't know, baby bug.. I don't know. But hey! We can look for them now can't we?" Carlia smiles big with her mouth alone. "We can go into town and see if they have just have been working so hard to be able to buy us a new house!"

Moud smiles and nods getting excited, not knowing that her older sister held little to no hope for their parents even being alive anymore. It had been years of her raising her sister from infancy to now so deep down Carlia knew there parents were gone.

" I'll start getting things packed up! " Her sister ran around excitedly picking up her toys
" Remember some cloths dear. I'll get the remaining meat jared so we can have it while traveling ok?
" Ok! I'll get the wagon ready to! " Moud runs outside to get a small wagon ready with a mule so they could have some sort of transportation

Carlia smiles seeing her sister run and bounce around. Seeing her so excited made her heart feel warm. She goes back to cooking their dinner preparing the jars for preserving the rest. She hoped that they could be happier away from there

Once Moud was done preparing everything she sat with her older sister so the two could eat. She prayed softly to herself before putting some mashed sweet potatoes in her mouth. She kicked her legs under the table

" I'm glad you like it. Maybe we can find a place to have a real garden. Good soil." Carlia spoke up from eating the meat. " It'll be nice to not have to worry about food all the time
" Can you make lots of pickles!" Moud asked with a cute messy smile
Carlia laughs " yes of course. Now eat up and we'll ride off in the morning

Moud bounced in her seat and started eating quickly so she could sleep faster. Carlia smiles softly, today allowed her a chance to feed her sister and give her hope. She hoped tomorrow will keep healing their hearts.

The morning comes slowly showing the beautiful colors of the dawn sky. Outside Carlia and Moud were packing the wagon making sure they had enough food to last until they get into the village. Once they were done Moud was sat in the back while Carlia started to ride them off into the world. They were starting a new life on the road that would bring them a family once again.
