"Happy Birthday Dear, Angelica! Happy Birthday to you!"
My sister blew out the candles and everyone clapped. She's turning 24 today. My mom and dad wanted to throw a party for her so they decided to invite over 50 people.
We were in the garden and lanterns draped over causing a "starry" effect. Man, they've never done anything this fancy for me before. Angelica is their "successful" daughter. I'm just an average person.
Angelica ran to me and engulfed me in a hug, "How's my favorite baby sis?" she asked.
"I'm your only sister." I mumbled.
"We haven't hung out in a while! I want to spend some time with you!" She beamed.
"We don't ever hang out." I rolled my eyes.
"Well, I want you to come to the mall with me tomorrow." She stated.
"What if I don't want to go with you?" I pushed.
"Then I'll tell mom about that time you snuck out with your boyfriend when she clearly said you couldn't date-"
"He broke up with me." I interrupted.
"You're kidding right?" She chuckled lightly.
I looked down to my shoes and stayed silent. He broke up with me a few months ago and it still affects me now.
"Aww, baby. Why?" She asked.
I forced myself not to look at her, "He found someone better."
"Who's better than you?!" Now she was mad,"You're one of the best people I know! I mean-"
"It's okay. School's over and I'm moving out in a week."
"Wait. What?" She asked.
"Now that school's over, I decided it's time to go. I got accepted into the AMDA in New York and I already found an apartment." I stated plainly.
"Wow, I'm so proud of you!" She hugged me once more.
"It's not a big deal!" I laughed.
"It is! It's your dream to go to a performing arts college! Look at you! My little Lucy's all grown up!" She wiped a fake tear from her eye.
"I'm 19, hardly grown up!" I shook my head.
~ a few hours later ~
I stood in my room with several cardboard boxes scattered everywhere.
"I'M GOING TO CRY! One more week until I see my favorite penguin in the whole universe!" My best friend, Mark yelled from my laptop screen.
"You're such a dork." I rolled my eyes.
"Be nice! Isn't it like 2am over there?" He asked.
"Yeah. I'm just procrastinating. I don't wanna start packing!" I groaned.
"Dye your hair."
"What?" I asked, facing the screen.
"When you get here, we're going to dye your hair brown. It'll make your beautiful hazel eyes stand out!" He beamed.
"You're so gay it hurts! The day has come! You, Mark, are now giving me fashion advice." I teased.
"Mean! Well, you're so straight it hurts!" He sassed.
"You're a loser." I said folding my clothes and placing them in a box.
"But I'm YOUR loser!' He said emphasizing 'your'.
My eyes landed on a very familiar picture from across my room. Tears threatened to spill as I took the picture in my small hands.
"Luce? Lucy?" Mark asked.
"Yeah?" I choked out, dropping the picture in the box with my clothes.
"Forget about him. He's not worth your tears. Believe me, you're going to find some guy who loves you and only you. And he's going to be a fucking lucky guy." He said sternly.
"You're so philosophical." I laughed, wiping a tear. I don't know what I'd do without Mark.
"You know it! Now get some rest, sweetie. You've got packing to do tomorrow!"
