No-one questioned me too much when I gave my version of what had happened in that alley. I still had to give a statement to Internal Affairs, and they gave me a two-week suspension for running after Callipari on my own, but I took it gladly

The boss definitely wasn't happy, giving me the usual lecture about not being a cowboy. He then poured me a glass of whiskey from the bottle he kept in his desk and told me I'd done well.

They had found me standing near Callipari's body with his gun in his hand; open and shut case of self-defence, kill or be killed.

I decided I wanted to be closer to the family after all this, so I asked for a transfer. I took up the first job I got offered, the detective's position at the station in Carlton.

Josie gave birth to our daughter Donna just before we moved. She was beautiful, with my blue eyes and her mother's fiery red hair. And of course Mama was happy to have another grandchild to spoil.

Every day I thanked God for giving me the chance to avenge my father; I hadn't actually planned on killing Callipari, but in my mind I had done the right thing.

To this day, I still love my job, and I have never crossed that line since.
