Marilyn woke up groggy and alone, her alarm blaring in the background.
She groaned and slapped her phone, trying to turn off her alarm to no avail. She finally cursed and picked up her phone, turning off the alarm. She had work today.
She usually worked a couple days a week over at the golf course as a beverage cart attendant. It wasn't the best job, but it paid and as long as she had a job it seemed to keep her parents and other elders happy.
She quickly pulled a white polo t-shirt on and black skirt. She brushed her hair, pulling it into a ponytail, grabbing her hat. She hated wearing the hat so much. She grabbed her tennis shoes and pulled them on before she made her bed. Her room was a mess from her and Rafe's activities last night.
She grabbed her phone and checked her texts.
You'll never guess what's on its way Rafe texted her.
Let me guess... generators?
Right on
Awesome, sounds like you could use a celebratory round on the course today ;)
She shoved her phone in her pocket and grabbed her phone. She headed down and sighed. The house was a mess. She was definitely going to have to clean up before her parents got home. She had a few hours after her shift to make it look like nothing ever happened.
She pulled a water bottle out of the fridge and picked up a couple pieces of trash before heading to work.
She walked into work just in time and rushed to the back to put her personal belongings in her locker.
"Last night was fun," Violet said, walking in.
Violet was probably the only reason Marilyn got the job, that and maybe her parents and their name. She didn't even try to impress them during her interview.
"Tell me about it," Marilyn sighed.
"You're lucky Sarah and Topper weren't injured."
Marilyn growled. "Don't remind me."
She cursed under her breath as the two of them clocked in. History loves to repeat itself and that was one incident Marilyn did not want to happen again. It was the whole reason she despised Sarah.
It had been at Marilyn's house, throwing a party when her parents weren't there. They never cared before until that particular party where Sarah got drunk. Marilyn didn't really know what really happened, she had been with Rafe. Sarah got hurt though and ended up in the emergency room.
Honestly if it wasn't for Rafe, Marilyn would've been in juvie or jail right now. Ward had wanted to press charges but Rafe talked him out of it. Her parents also were hot on her tail but Violet had her back.
Ever since she hated Sarah for one, ratting her out and two, being so stupid she got hurt when she should've known to be careful or be caught.
She was busy cleaning off a shelf when Rafe, Topper, and Kelce walked in.
"Hey boys," she smirked, setting her towel aside and placing her hands on her hips.
"Well if it isn't our favorite worker," Topper said.
"In the flesh. How many holes are you thinking?" She asked, punching it into the computer.
"Depends how long you want your bro busy for," Kelce replied, smacking the back of Rafe's shoulder.
Marilyn sighed jokingly and leaned her arm on the computer, resting her cheek in her hand. "Well I do still have to clean up once I'm outta here before my parents get back for midsummers. Also that stunt you pulled Topper, not cool."
"Chill Marilyn, no one got hurt."
"This time. Don't do it again or I swear I'll-"
"Careful, you're on shift."
"What? You're going to report me?"
She glared at Topper who glanced at Rafe. "Wanna control your girl?"
Rafe shrugged. "You heard her, don't do it again or you'll have to answer to her."
Topper rolled his eyes, walking away.
"Eighteen holes it is," Marilyn said, scanning Rafe's membership card. "I'll text you tonight ok?"
"I could always swing by," Rafe whispered, leaning on the counter.
"My parents are coming home tonight, so unless you wanna help me clean up after the party, have dinner with them, I think what you're thinking is out of the question."
Rafe sighed. "So come over to my place."
Marilyn smiled and turned back to her shelf, grabbing her rag. "Mom has me helping with midsummers which is only a few nights away."
Rafe sighed angrily, licking his lips. "Cancel."
"You know I can't Rafe."
"I don't care."
Marilyn placed her hands on her hips, staring at him. "As much as I love you, wanting to spend time with me tonight is just not going to work."
Rafe sighed, shoving his hands in his pockets.
"Yo, come on man," Kelce yelled from across the room.
"Just give me a minute!" He shouted back, turning back to Marilyn. "What are you doing Saturday night?"
Marilyn shrugged. "I have off, however I have to help set up for midsummers, oh I also need to get a dress, what color is your suit?"
"I don't have one yet."
"You're planning on going right?"
"Yes, but what are you doing Saturday?"
Rafe seemed exasperated and perhaps slightly nervous as he licked his lips again and his fingers tapped on the counter.
"Rafe Cameron, are you asking me out on a date?" Marilyn smiled.
He asked her out before, a few times. Rarely, however, every time he did he seemed nervous, like she might say no or suddenly decide this was the time to announce she no longer wanted to be his girlfriend.
"Maybe," he sighed, running his hands through his hair, placing his hat back on his head. "I was wondering if you'd like to go to the outdoor cinema. With me."
He glanced at her nervously as she smiled.
"I'd love to."
He let out a deep breath and smiled. "Great, I'll pick you up at six."
"It's a date."
"Make sure to wear that top I like."
"We'll see," she yelled as he walked off to join his friends for a round of golf.
She chuckled to herself, it wasn't often he asked her out and treated their relationship like it was something other than a quick screw around. But when he did, it made her feel all warm and fuzzy.
