Our school is known for its sports team. Football, basketball, soccer, swim team, track. The one I am most interested in? Soccer. The reason? Lucas Hemingway or Luke as everyone called him.
He was the most popular guy in my high school. One would assume it's because of sports. Though soccer did play a part in his popularity, the main reason why everyone adores him is that he is an absolute sweetheart.
That's probably because of the way he was brought up. Because of his parents. They are the most genuine people to have ever been. That's the one thing I am jealous of when it comes to Luke. To be that parents' child was a true blessing.
Sometimes I wish that I was born to Mason and Elizabeth Hemingway. But then I realized that would make Luke my brother and I don't want that. Not at all.
I have been crushing on Luke ever since freshman year. He was a sophomore then. Our meet-cute was the most cliche thing ever.
The janitor had just mopped the floor. I was running cause I was late to class. You can guess what happened next, right? I slipped. One of the most embarrassing moments of my life. I would regret that moment forever had it not brought me Luke.
Luke was the only one there, he asked me if I was okay and after informing me that I might have twisted my ankle, he proceeded to take me into his arms and carry me into the nurses office. And then offered to drive me home. Which I declined cause I didn't want him to see my home.
After that, I saw him everywhere and fell for him more and more everyday. He would smile at me in the hallways sometimes and I swear my heart almost bursts every time he smiled. But apart from that occasional smile, he didn't approach me and I didn't approach him. That was until junior year when my best friend, Samantha, started dating his best friend, Samuel. They were together known as the Sams.
It was only then that I realized that the boy I have been in love with for the better part of my adolescence did not even know my name. Pathetic, I know.
God I still remember that day. The Sams wanted us to meet, so we all decided to go to the movies. Samantha gave me a ride there and Samuel came with Luke. And the Sams started making out as soon as they could. Maybe because it was getting awkward or to give them space, Luke said he was going to get popcorn and asked if I wanted to come too. Obviously I went with him. There was a huge line, we had finally gotten the popcorn and soda when Luke got a text. He looked at it, furrowed his brows in a really cute way, finally turned to me and asked, "Are you V?"
At first I was confused and then maybe a bit hurt. He definitely saw the confusion on my face cause then he said, "Because Sam, your friend, just texted me asking if V is with me or not? "
Oh now I get it, still hurt though. "Yeahh she calls me V. It's short for Genevieve. I mean not really. But Sam calls me that ".
He told me that it was cute and said the Sams were waiting for us. Cute. Luke thinks my name is cute. Giddy, I trailed after him to meet up with the Sams, saw the movie and got home. That was the day and I finally got to officially meet Luke Hemingway, the love of my life.
And that was it. The next 9 months was probably the best few months of my life.
We went from people who smiled at each other in hallways to people who talked to each other in the hallways to people who sat together at lunch to people who texted till they fell asleep to people who went on date to people who held hands in the hallways to people who kissed in hallways to meeting his family to spending the night together to people who were in love to people who promised each other forever to people who broke each other's hearts in the span of 9 months.
9 months of absolute bliss and pure joy. All for it to end in 9 seconds.
And then 9 months later, I welcomed my own bundle of absolute bliss and pure joy into the world.
