Sparkles

I'll admit it was concerning at first. Very concerning, in fact.

There stood a girl (was it a girl?) at my doorstep two months ago, grinning like the Cheshire cat and shuffling gracefully on her feet like a feline. As weird as that was—a friendly girl at my door, I mean—it did not even remotely measure up to the absurdity of her appearance. I could not, for the life of me, recall seeing anyone with sparkly bits that almost resembled stars rising from their head. What was that?

"Hello!" The brunette (surprisingly enough, her hair that was emanating these strange particles appeared very... normal) chirped, eyes twinkling with mirth.

I had to second-guess the belief that I had never met anyone like her. She had to be pranking me, right? Maybe that was it. Thinking back to it, it had been 1st April that day, so it was April's Fools, after all.

"Uh... hi." I replied, unable to sound anywhere near as enthusiastic as the strange girl before me did.

That didn't seem to faze her, rather making her grin widen, "You're so pretty."

I. Was. Shocked.

Not only did I have some absurd creature with all her sparkles and shit standing at my door, but she was also calling me pretty. Yeah, yeah this was definitely a prank.

"Look, I'm working on this paper for college right now and honestly... I'm lagging behind on my work and I don't have time for this April Fool's thingy you're doing to me. I hope you... understand." I'm sure I cringed visibly at my own words, realizing they might have been a bit rude and expecting some sort of backlash about being a party pooper.

Instead, that never came.

All I got was a confused (I wouldn't dare admit at the time that it was, kind of, just a little cute) head tilt, "April Fool's? Why do you say that?"

I struggled for a few seconds, gesturing above my head with my hands, "...Sparkles."

Her smile was back in an instant, "Yeah, sparkles. They're really pretty. Do you like mine?"

"...Yes..? They look alright, I think. Very... real." I had to give her that.

"Thank you." She almost seemed bashful as her gaze settled in between the space that separated us, "I'm Jennie."

Even with my brain screaming at me to cut this encounter short, I found myself hooked. Curious, although that was most definitely going to take a toll on my grades.

"Lisa." I found myself saying, watching the sparkles disperse through the air as her head moved in a delighted nod.

I was being ogled at like I was treasure. In the coming months, I would come to know why that was.

"Soulmates." I stated in a flat voice, sound of the pen dropping from between my fingers on the study desk meeting Jennie's affirmative hum.

She'd done it again. Would the shock value ever diminish with her? I hadn't a clue.

"Soulmates. You and me." Her light voice seemed to soften the blow... well, more like the bomb she had dropped just minutes ago on my own, interestingly enough, sparkly head.

Yes, I had a sparkly head too. At least, according to Jennie.

"So, you see sparkles coming out of my hair, too? Like, in a literal sense? It doesn't have to do with the... the, uh, crush... umm, you have on me?" That too, had been a bomb she'd dropped on me one morning into the first month of us meeting each other when she'd arrived at my door with a box of the cutest little donuts.

"No. I think everything is brighter when you're around but the sparkles don't have a light of their own. They don't light up the room or make me see better in the dark when I sleep over. They're just... floating there." Jennie's eyes, crinkled at the edges due to her grin, followed an invisible path of the sparkles she was referring to over my head happily.

I still blushed thinking about that. God, she was sleeping over. Two days a week. It almost felt like we were... Some people reported their ass felt like it was lit up on fire but for me, it had to be my face right now.

"That means we're soulmates?" I questioned, gulping to ease the flutter inside my chest that was ever-present during the entirety of this conversation.

Jennie nodded, endeared smile on her lips, "I've dreamt of meeting you since forever," Her tone was wistful, chocolate eyes gazing at me like I was everything, "Since my parents told me of their story when I was five."

That did confirm it, almost. I hadn't had parents or friends growing up, and the possibility of anyone outside of those people telling me about a soulmate was... I'd say little, but given that I was the shy, awkward, introverted me at the end of the day, there were zero possibilities where that could occur. Figures.

"Well... uh, okay. Then that's that." You fucking dimwit, I reprimanded myself mentally. I couldn't believe myself sometimes.

Jennie laughed one of her rich, amused chuckles, "That's that then, soulmate." She winked knowingly.

Then, her hand sneaked its way across the table, settling over mine, parting my fingers and delicately threading hers through them. Her palm was hot, and I could see the growing flush adorning her cheeks, feeling my own blush rise again.

In that moment, I knew that even if her head wasn't a factory of pretty sparkles, I'd still know. Somewhere, I had always known.

I closed my fingers around her hand tighter, an embarrassed smile making my warm cheeks hurt.

Soulmates. With all the sparkles and shit, too. Who would have thought?
