The morning sun was streaming through the crevices of my curtains. I could feel the warmth of the sun as it shined on my face. Still laying in bed, I reached over and grabbed my phone from my nightstand checking the time. It was 7:45 and I knew I had to get up to be on time for class. Groggily I pulled myself out of bed and slipped on my fuzzy slippers. I quickly brushed through my long dark hair and put in my contacts. As I was finishing brushing my teeth, I checked my phone again and I was running late. I grabbed my backpack, slipped on an old pair of short gray Uggs, and ran out of my room making sure to lock it before I turned around and bolted down the hallway.
I didn’t have time to change my clothes so I was still wearing my plain white T-shirt and light pink pajama pants with the Eiffel tower on them. As I ran out of the dorm building I rushed down the street to the science building and ran into class with only a minute to spare. Looking around I took my usual seat at the lab table and pulled out my books from my backpack.
The teacher started explaining the lab we were supposed to do in our groups, and the entire class began to work quickly and efficiently. We were supposed to be burning a piece of Magnesium ribbon for our lab. Half way through our lab, I heard a blood curdling scream from behind me and as I turned around I heard a loud explosion. The lab table behind me had managed to set fire to their entire lab station. Before the teacher could even attempt to remedy the situation the fire alarm started screeching letting everyone know to evacuate.
There was chaos as everyone pushed and shoved to get out of the room quickly, within minutes the entire building was empty and luckily everyone was safe. In the distance we could hear the fire truck siren and in less than a minute the truck had parked in front of the building with firefighters spilling out. They rushed to get the water hose going, and eventually they stopped the fire.
All the students were still gathered by the building across the street, unsure of what to do next. As the teachers began talking to the firefighters the crowd began to thin out. Yet I stayed in place as I spotted a familiar face. Hesitantly I walked over to one of the firefighters and lightly tapped his shoulder until her turned around. His dark tall figure loomed over me, his eyes filled with confusion. Before he could even register who I was I had wrapped my arms around his neck. It took a few seconds, but eventually he wrapped his arms around me and lifted me gently off the ground.
“Ashna! I haven’t seen you in forever, what in the world are you doing here?” A hoarse voice whispered into my ear, much deeper than the high pitched voice of the lanky child I knew as a kid.
“What am I doing here? I go to school here, what in the world are you doing here?”
“I became a firefighter about 2 months ago after I graduated from college. I knew it was the only job that I wanted.” We both turned around as one of the firefighters yelled to everyone to get on the truck. “I gotta go but I'll call you tonight and we can set up a time to catch up. Its been way too long!”
“All right! Bye Dustin, it was really good to see you again!” I yelled at him as he ran towards the firetruck.
