《 Mila's Pov 》

It was rare to be born during the war, or at least it felt like it, knowing only a few sandwing dragonets my age.

Both of my parents are part of Burn's Army, but my mother usually stays behind. This time, they both were ordered out, so I'm staying with my aunt, Mirage, and Cousin, Raja.

The sandkingdom was usually bright and hot, but today, the sun felt even more fierce as it reached midday.

"Mila, come play with me!" My cousin jumped beside me as I sat staring out the hollow window.

"Okay." I shrugged, stepping away from the light. I didn't really feel like it but I'm too bored to stare out at the sand all day.

We went outside and she tapped my shoulder with her snout, "Tag! You're it Millie!" She said before giggling and running around the sandstone house.

I like that nickname, it's what my dad calls me. "Don't be too rough girls!" My aunt shouted from inside.

"We won't." I gave her smile and chased after Raja.

We played the rest of the day, and just as the sun was setting and the three moons peaked out my uncle flew back from a long day of battling.

"Daddy!" My cousin squealed and excitedly leaped to her father.

Her mother reached her talon out to stop Raja from running into him, shaking her head. My cousin sat down in disappointment.

I slowly walked over to them, as they stood in the doorway, I could tell my uncle's scales were dirty and he had deep scratches down his shoulders. His eyes where low and tired as he spoke to his wife.

"Dada what's wrong?" Raja whined, her talons anxiously digging at the sand below her.

"She's only three! And we can't take care of her full time, Cleo, you know that." My aunt cried out as I approached sitting right next to my cousin.

My aunt looked away as she noticed I was right there, sniffling. My uncle looked at me, right at me. His eyes glassy now and I knew something bad must've happened.

I knew my parents were supposed to come back with him, but they weren't here. "Where are they?" I asked hesitantly, maybe I didn't want the answer.

I sat there frozen as my aunt ushered my very confused cousin inside. My uncle cleared his throat before he spoke, his words stabbing right through me. "They're gone Mila, they didn't make it. I'm sorry."

I didn't know what to feel, I'm only three years old, I can't survive by myself. Can I?

I looked at my talons as the tears fell on them. "You'll be staying with us for tonight but we don't have enough to support you. I hope you understand."
He said again. Only making the wound deeper.

This happens all the time, doesn't it? Families being broken apart because of this war. It just happened to happen to me.

My aunt made a meat soup for dinner, but I wasn't hungry. I just stayed in Raja's very small room, borrowing a spot on the ground.

"You can have the bed, Mila." Raja jestered as she stepped into the dimlit space. She knows now, her mom must've said something. And now she feels pity for me. But maybe I don't mind.

I slowly got up and layed on the large flat slate of rock that was covered in straw, making it far more comfortable than the ground. "Thank you." I mumbled.

I didn't sleep that night. Time moved so slowly I doubted it was moving at all until the sun glistened through the hallway into the room.

Before I knew it, my aunt was coming back from her journey to the scorpion den. With news that I'm going to be staying with my grandmother, who I hardly know.
