"I'm keeping the baby."

My father turns around. You know in the cartoons when one of the evil characters turns red with anger and steam comes out their ears, when they don't get what they want. I'm convinced that is what he looks like. He stands still for a couple seconds, his fists clenched, the room quite and then he charges towards her.

Before he can punch her I grab his fist. "What do you think you are doing?" You are condoning her behavior she cannot keep the baby she will bring shame to our name." "So that makes it okay to hit a pregnant girl, yet alone your daughter. Go upstairs Athena, I'll be up there in a couple minutes." She stands up but shakes her head. "Go."

The minute she is gone my father punches me and I take it. Every punch every kick, I don't fight back. He doesn't deserve my energy.

Once he is done I am left with a broken arm and a black eye. I stand up and look at my mother tears filled in her eyes but she says nothing. "Don't stand there and cry when you watched your husband beat your son and almost hit the shit out of your daughter who is pregnant. You are our mother and you feel nothing for us. How many times have I helped you get away from him? How many times have I lied for you, so you don't end up looking like this? And you just don't care your name just means so much to you."

Tears run down her face and I turn and walk away. I want to comfort her she is my mother but I can't forgive her any longer for what she has put me and sister through. I knock on my sisters door. She doesn't open." It's me, open the door"

Slowly she opens the door. Athena looks at me and cries even harder. "Don't cry I'm okay." "You look terrible and it all my fault." "No it's not. You don't take the blame over our fathers actions." "I'm sorry." she cries and I hold her till she falls asleep."

"Don't worry I will take you away from this. I promise."

I leave early before the sun is up. I make my way downtown to pick up my Athena and my new Id's, I go the doctor next tell him some bullshit story about getting into a fight, he gives me some pain meds puts my arm in a sling and I make my way over to the bank. I transfer all the money money my sister and I have into a new account, which will get us away from here and to live off for a while. I buy a new reliable car.

When I get back home my parents are no where to be seen and my sister is still sleeping. I wake her up and tell her pack a bag. I leave a note behind telling our parents we not coming back, not to look for us and to tell anyone we gone to some boarding school or some other bullshit lie they could come up with.

She says nothing when we walk out the house. We turn around and look at the house there is some feeling of knowing we won't be returning this is goodbye.

We travel for six hours to a small town called Golden Stars. I found an apartment for us. My sister looks happy here, a small balcony that looked over the city below, people who knocked on our door with welcoming food and drinks and more importantly no one knew who we were yet they treated us like family.

"Thank for this, Silas. This is what I needed a small town to grow my family. If you want to go back then go, I can't keep you here." "You are insane if you think I sacrificed everything to go back to that shit hole. We can make it here go back to school it will be fine." "Yes everything will," she said but that was far from the truth.

Six months later she was in pain. I took her to the hospital, she had the baby. A beautiful baby boy she held in her arms. Yet Athena turned to me and said if I don't make it sign the his birth certificate for me. Name him Grayson, meaning God's blessing. Promise me.

This made my head spin, why was she making me do this, why does this feel like the end but those thoughts were gone once I saw her smile lit us when the little guy in her arms smiled and wrinkled his nose.

I promised her then and there I would give him the world, what I'd didn't expect was her to be gone ten minutes later. She was bleeding and they couldn't stop it. I was broken and defeated but I had promises to keep and a new born sleeping next to me. I arranged for her to be cremated, signed his birth papers, we stayed there for a month before I packed up the house and we made our way over to the next town, bridgeway.
