Frida had never felt so numb in her entire life. She could feel Hans hugging her shoulders as she wept, felt she was still staring at the place where her husband's body used to lay.
Then, she suddenly felt the urge to throw up. "Hans, pass me the bin-" Was all she was able to say. Her eldest son passed it just in time before she began vomiting violently. "Mamma?" He asked quietly, brushing back her hair.
"I need him." She sobbed.
"He'll always be with you." The young man soothed.
"I need him hugging and protecting me; I need him loving me! I need my Benny! And don't you go pretending you don't know what I mean.""I- I know. But you need to check on Luddie, he's been in such a panic since Benny passed." He pulled his mother against his chest, trying to stifle his own cries. Peter was sat in the corner, stony faced; while his sisters Helene and Lotta had taken Ludvig out for a stroll with baby Jonathan.
Anni-Frid felt terrible for rushing her Lise-Lotte and her family out here, but she also knew they would want to say goodbye. The thought that she would have to tell her already adult children that they would have a little sibling on the way terrified her out of her wits. Oh God, that meant her grandson would have an aunt or uncle younger than him! Only younger by a year or so, but younger nevertheless.
"But I needed him now more than ever."
"Why, mamma?" Hans asked, trying not to provoke a strong reaction. The young man was internally struggling with the sudden death of his stepfather, but if it was bad for him, he couldn't imagine how his mother was feeling. Especially the reason why he died. Benny had only wanted to do something nice for his wife, and he died because of it."You can't tell anyone else yet, only Ludvig knows, but I'm expecting a baby." She dried her eyes, unable to look at her son.
"Oh." Was all he could say, his voice neutral. Hans wasn't happy about this, but he wasn't sad either. Benny was dead, and on the same day he was told his mother was pregnant. It was just very unfortunate circumstances, and Hans just didn't know how to react. All these thoughts were whirling around his head, so he hugged Frida- that was the only thing he could do.Hans was also a young man now, his little sister even had her own child now! Frida was older... her pregnancy would be considered high-risk, right? What if something happened to his Mamma? How would he and Lotta cope; how would Ludvig?
"Are you far along?"
"10 weeks or so, it wasn't planned." She whispered, glancing over at his stepson. Peter hadn't spoken during the entire time, it was like he was frozen; numb. Frida pulled away from Hans and went over to the man, sitting next to him and taking his hand. "Hey, do you need a hug?" Anni-Frid asked, looking at him in concern. He nodded, but then the mask broke and Peter burst into tears.
"Peter, darling..." The woman's lip quivered, stroking his hair and hugging him hard."Why did he have to die? Why, Frida, Why?!" Peter gulped hard.
"I don't know why. I wish I could tell you, but I don't know why. It was God's will." She sniffed.
"Fuck God." Her stepson growled, and Frid pulled away from him, shocked. Peter had never spoken that way before.
"Peter... I understand how you're feeling, and believe you me I feel the same, but don't say that out loud. People could take it the wrong way."
"No- If you still believe in God after this, you really don't understand at all!" Her stepson shouted, darting away from her and storming out of the room.Mrs Andersson burst into tears, sitting further back in her chair so she could wrap her hands around her knees. Frida rested her head against them, practically howling. She'd lost everyone who'd ever loved her. Ragnar and she had split, Aggie left her and never looked back, and now Benny was up in heaven.
Oh Aggie. Frida missed her blonde hair, her laugh, her smile... But ultimately the woman had to put her family first. Before they had officially broken up, the women had hit a few rough patches. Aggie had become jealous of her relationship with Benny, and Frida was becoming insecure, thinking that her girlfriend would eventually fall in love with another woman.
