down the line

crawling on our stomach once over the wall i feel my hand begin to shake, holding my gun with the knife on carful not to cut myself.

schofield is the first one over launching himself into the mud as me and blake follow behind. our head barely protected that anything can happen. listening for any sound, any movement, and enemy fires.

trying to catch our breath with our lives on the line we begin to slide our way across the muddy, bloody puddles. feeling my trousers once dry become wet and heavy. locking eyes with the wires towards the german line.

making our way i get a good look at the land for my first time, what was once a blossoming open field is now a hunting ground, a cemetery for hundreds of men. grey, hollow and dead, full of bodies, holes and not a life in site. except for the bugs flying around the dead horses.

looking at the two men we all give a nod and make our way onto our knees moving swiftly and mostly quiet. if any germans see us, there is no coming back. we soon reach our british wires and push our way through being careful not to fall into the wire or stab ourselves.

we make it to the bowing chap, a dead soldier slumped over the wire, schofield grabs onto a piece of the wire and pulls it back, enough room for us to move into. once me and blake get through i turn around at the last second to see scho slip in the mud and the wire slicing right into his palm, hooking into his flesh.

"scho are you okay?" i yell quickly, trying to move over to help him get over while he helps out and grabs the remaining wire and rips it out of his palm.

scho nods instinctively and balls his hand up to stop the bleeding and slowly begins to make his way to blake who is past the wire now

"is your hand okay?" he questions

scho nods once more. "just look for cover."

"we will fix it up, don't worry." blake goes to take his hand when scho stops him. "not here." he nudges towards a hole

"sap trench." scho points out.

he goes in first, sliding down the hole and begins to crouch low and moves fast. behind him me and blake kept looking around for any enemies that are lurking around. i look into the hole to see scho checking his hand, puss and blood pulses out of his fresh wound. my eyes then wonder to something next to him, a corpse of a german soldier rotting, rats inside of him eating away the body.
