"I like the sun mama"

I looked at my daughter, her beautiful face shinning in the summer sun. She was beautiful.

"Yes baby it's very beautiful"

I said smiling at her as I watched her play, I sat in the grass feeing the earth, the surround sound of nature waiting for my mom to get back with ice cream.

"Why does the sun do that?"

My 4 year old pointed to the big ball of gas above us and plopped down next to me.

I thought for a moment thinking of what she could've meant.

"The light?" I asked her, combing my hand through her hair.

"Yeah, why does it do that?" She asked again

"Well uh Baby-" I couldn't come up with an answer for her, I looked at her once again, she had a puzzled look on her face with the sun shinning bright on her face.

"Well baby it's because someone up there" I pointed up to the blue sky, "there doing their job to make sure everyone on earth can have a light, a little hope in the dark"

My answer wasn't the best but I didn't think my 4 year old kid wanted to hear about science, which at the degree I had I certainly didn't know the answer.

"Then why does it get dark if people need light" she said, she faced me with that serious look on her face.

"Because baby, everyone needs to go through a little darkness to get back to the light sometimes"

My answer satisfied her and she went back to playing with the strands of grass.

I don't think she ever looked so at peace before.

It was also the last time I saw her, my perfect little girl.
