Petals: Chapter 3

I suddenly flash back to June and Mina's apartment.

 

I gaze at my phone display, the initial shock which June and Mina instigated has died down several minutes ago and for the mean time we sit on the couch in their cozy apartment. June has put on some sort of old superman movie and though they are facing the screen, I can feel their eyes studying me.

 

I scroll through my contacts, stopping at Xavier, I press the call button absently.

No answer.

I press call again and June snatches the phone from my clutches; her determination crippling my hand in the process.

"You shouldn't call him! He's is a....a......Mina, help me out here" June doesn't turn her head, as if she's afraid breaking eye contact will send me into some sort of virtual time-warp.

"Monstrously repugnant?" Mina cocks her head to the side.

"Yea! Damn right!..." June stands and places her hands on her hips in triump, her sudden shift in movement causes her body to push my head back abruptly, "wait... What does that mean?"

"Do you mind June? You nearly knocked me into oblivion with your enormous rack!" She responds by slapping my arm.

"Ow!" I can already see the welt marks from her fingers.

"Maybe we should go out tonight, we can go play pool at the local pub or something, maybe there will be some interesting prospects we can talk to, that is, if you're up to it." Mina begins to collect our mugs and begins to head for the kitchen.

"Wha-?" June is just poking fun at Mina, however, clearly not getting the joke, Mina replies.

"We can go to the local boozer, play some pool and pick up some hot guys." She yells back, lengthening every syllable as if she is talking to some 5 year-old, the sound of Mina using such unrefined, colloquial language is too much for me to bear and I roll on the floor in fits of giggles.

June laughs her head off and eventually crumples to the floor next to me. Soon, Mina is standing above us; her hands crossed over each other while she impatiently taps her foot.

June smiles, "I have a better idea."

 

 

 

"Lou!"I snap back to attention, suddenly Ryan is towering over me, his dead-pan expression is suddenly on his face once again and June seems completely oblivious.

Ryan holds out a huge hand and I slowly shake it, his grip is like a vice and I squeeze back, "at least he's trying" I think to myself.

"Ryan is going to let us have a go on the new go-karts!" June looks like a kid in a candy store as she runs off with her arms flailing wildly in the air.

Ryan walks calmly behind her, his expression softens as his gaze fixes upon her, and I can't help but smile.

Mina walks with me to the track and I talk to her on the way.

"I can't believe this! Look at him! I mean, DAMN!" My mouth gapes open with appreciation and Mina nods in approval at this statement.

"She sure can pick them, but you'll never guess how they met though" Mina smirks and dare to ask.

"They met at a superman convention" Mina explains and I giggle, it comes as no suprise.
