Norway, Aurora

According to Wikipedia a best friend is someone with whom one shares the strongest types of friendship.

I would say I actually have one, but I haven't met her in a while. Maddie Miller is my childhood and best friend and we know basically everything about each other. We know each other's favorite colors but also every embarrassing moment we've been through.

The problem is that we live on different sides of the Atlantic Ocean. I'm living in Norway and Maddie lives in the USA.

I was born in the USA and my family lived there until I turned 13. My mum and dad are both Norwegians but they met at a bar in New York and fell in love I guess, yuk!

My dad decided when he was the same age as me that he wanted to study in the USA instead of Norway. He has only told me a few memories but the highlight of the time was when he went to college and met Clark Miller, his future best friend. They disliked each other in the beginning and were academical rivals. It didn't take long tho before they realized that they shared a lot of interests and that's when their friendship started to blossom.

Our families build houses pretty close to each other and they also decided to build summer houses next to each other close to the sea. Our family's spend our whole summers there.

My mum got pregnant with my bigger sister Audrey six years before me. Mia Miller aka Clark Miller's Wife got pregnant with Luke two years before me and his little sister Maddie.

Our mums were so hyped up when they realized that they were pregnant at the same time with girls. Maddie and I sticked together like if we were two pieces glued on to each other. Our mums even dressed us with similar clothes.

We didn't go to the same school but we tried to meet as often as we could on the weekends, but we could spend unlimited time together when it was summer.

Summer has always been my favorite season of the year. I love to spend time with the Miller family and they have always been there for me. I spend of course the majority of my time with Maddie, but Luke would join sometimes.

I remember Luke as a typical golden retriever boy. His eyes were bright blue and his hair was blond and curly. He always treated me like his little sister and I thought of him as my bigger brother and nothing more. He was cute and good looking, but the interest was never really there.

I felt like the world stopped when my parents told me that we were going to move to Norway. My dad had gotten a job offer and my parents wanted my sister and I to get to know our relatives better. I cried for weeks and Maddie did the same.

We moved and I made friends quickly and started to work really hard for my grades when I started high school. My sister and I learned Norwegian from our parents but we still felt more comfortable speaking English with each other. I called Maddie almost everyday the first year  but the time difference and our schedule's made it hard to talk every single day.

We talk once a week nowadays and my parents talk to Maddie's parents now and then. I haven't talked to Luke since we moved, but Maddie keeps me updated about all his girls and his football games.

"Aurora dinners ready!" Mum shouts from downstairs.
"Coming!" I shout back.

I walk down the stairs and into the kitchen.
"Oh hey, Adrian" I greet my sister's fiancé.
"Hi Rory" everyone use that nickname because they think my name is too long to pronounce. I have always liked my name, but I like my nickname too.

Mum is standing by the stove cooking something for dinner and Audrey is setting the table neatly, weird.
"Is something special happening or why are we eating such a fancy dinner?" I ask being confused.
"We need to tell you something, but sit down first"

I look at my sister trying to read her face expressions. I sit down where I usually sit and wait for everyone to get seated. My dad has some small talks with me about my day and he's still wearing his suit from work. We start to eat.

"So Rory..." my sister begins with and I wait for her to continue.
"...you know that Adrian and I have been planning our wedding?"
"Yes of course, I can't wait" I say shoving food into my mouth.
"Well, we have decided where the wedding will happen" she says making me even more curious.
"Where?!" I ask hoping Greece or Italy.
"The East coast, at our summerhouse" I drop my fork out of chock.
"Wait a minute, are we going back?"
"Yes sweetie, we're going to stay the whole summer and it will make it easier for you to move and get ready for college" mum tabs in. Yeah, got in to an Ivy League Collage in the states but I haven't told Maddie or any of the Millers yet. I didn't want to disappoint them if I decided not to move back.

I jump from my chair almost tripping on my own feet.
"Ahh, I can't believe it! I'm going to see Maddie again!" I squeal out of excitement.
"But she was visiting just a few months ago" Audrey says.
"But still, I miss her and I need to call her" I say.
"Eat first" mum says making me sit down.

I eat the food as fast as I can not caring about what my family members are talking about. I put my plate in the dishwasher and thanks mum for the dinner before running up to my room.

It takes a few signals before Maddie picks up the phone.
"Rory?" She asks with a tired voice.
"Maddie you won't believe it when I tell you this"
I hear her shift in position probably trying to focus more on what I'm about to tell her.
"What happened?" She ask already sounding more awake.
"We're spending the summer at the summerhouse!" I shout while jumping.
"What!?!!" Maddie squeals.

We keep talking about old memories from our summers and I feel a warm feeling spreading through my body. The warm sand under my feet at the beach and the cooling water against my skin in the pool. I have to wait only a few weeks until I'm there.

Time will fly by because I have my ending exams I need to get them done and I'm finally graduating high school.

In a few weeks I will be back and I will finally meet the whole Miller family after five years of waiting. I will meet Luke, that's going to be interesting.

So I've decided to start to write a new story. I hope you enjoyed the first chapter and have a great day!
