Chapter 1

January 19, 2016

"Ladies and gentlemen, our final skater is Penelope Olsen from Upstate, New York."

After the announcer calls my name, I hand my coach my jacket revealing my sparkly purple skating costume with floral detailing along the back. I skate up to the middle of the ice and look toward the audience to take a breath before taking my starting position.

Lana Del Rays, Young and Beautiful, starts to play and off I skate. I begin slowly to match the beautiful song. As the music gets closer to the chorus, the more complicated my stunts get. I prepare to perform my first Axel of my routine, and I almost fall out of my landing. Luckily I covered it pretty well. The crowd seemed to love it, my coach Addy always tells me to tune them out, but I don't always listen to her. But maybe today day I should have. While preparing to perform the final trick of the whole number, I heard someone yell in the audience. I paid no mind until I went to land out of my triple axle, and I lost my footing. I don't remember much; I remember the music stopping, the yelling of my name, Addy and seeing my mom.

The next day I woke up to the sound of beeping. I opened my eyes and saw flowers and teddy bears from the competition. I turned my head and saw my mom and my older brother arguing about something. My mom left my brother out in the hall, slamming the door and turning towards me with a huff. "Oh, sweetie. You're finally awake." She says sweetly. My mom, Josie is the kindest soul you would ever meet. She is like waking up and hearing the sounds of the morning doves in spring. But sometimes, she doesn't like us growing up. She stills pictures my brother and I as the small little kids playing at the park or out in the garden. She also hates that I skate, and how my brother is majoring in screenwriting. She believes he wastes his time, and they always argue about it.

"Hey, Mom," I say dryly. She runs towards the bed and pulls me into a tight hug, "Oh, Sweetie, I'm so glad you are alright," she says, a little muffled due to the tight hug she has me in. As she lets go, I look down, noticing my arm is bandaged, and my leg is in a white cast. "Mom, what happened?" I say, slightly panicking. Mom explains what happened, as I failed to land my big finishing trick. As I was trying to land safely, I hit my head hard on the ice, which caused a fair amount of blood loss, and my knee landed weirdly, causing my kneecap to get blown. "Can I still skate? Please tell me I can still skate," I say as my voice cracks. Mom doesn't even need to say anything; the look on her face says it all. I look at the ceiling and let the tears roll off my face.

"Mom, where's Harry? I need Harry."

Harry is my best friend, my comfort person. The person who got me through my dad leaving, the person who makes the gloomy days sunny. I look at my mom with pleading eyes, "where is he?" I say, a little more frustrated. She looks down and hands me the stupid letter, with the pretty pink envelope containing information on how this day became the worst day of my life.

Hey besties!!

What do we think? How do we like it?
This chapter is a little flashback to why Penelope is how she is.

Anyways, love y'a
