Max encore

Trembling, I brought it to my ear.

'Hey there Estrella.'

'Max. Why are you calling me.'

'Because it's rude to keep people waiting. Be a love and come open the door?'

I dropped the phone, and grabbed a pillow, hugging it to my chest.

Someone banged loudly on the door, and the handle shook.

I froze in shock.

I had no idea what to do.

Then suddenly I knew.

————————

Raelyn's POV:

The second I picked up the phone I knew it was urgent. Adrienne sounded terrified. God help the person who had put her in this state. She'd hung up immediately after, begging me to hurry, and telling me to get help.

I leapt into my car, and raced back to New York. I had been busy, but Adrienne was my priority.

Over the past few weeks, she'd been distancing herself from me. And as she did so, I realised just how dear she is to me.

I'm not yet sure why, or what it means, but I know that deep down, I care for Adrienne.

I've been trying to find the right time to tell her, to explain. But I've always been busy, or she's not wanted to.

I spent a weekend with my mother, and she more or less explained what Adrienne was feeling, and for once, I understood.

I've been a complete asshole to her, and I'll never forgive myself.

As I drove, I flipped through all the possible scenarios in my head. She might be pregnant? I tossed that option aside. A mini-Adrienne would be cute though.
She could be hurt, but she'd have called an ambulance. I had no idea what had happened, but I was determined to find out.

I got a call, and I put it on loudspeaker.

'R?'

'Yes?' I grit my teeth. Henry. My left-hand man. He was useful, and a good friend to me, but right now, he had better have a good reason to be contacting me.

'You left.'

Exasperated, I tried to keep my cool.

'Something came up.'

'More important that the training?'

'Infinitely.' I stepped on the gas as I arrived at Adrienne's block.

'Fine. We'll deal with it for now. Be here A.S.A.P please.'

'On it.' I hung up, pulling over right beside her apartment.

It was chilly outside, but adrenaline was keeping me warm. She'd told me to bring help, but I was pretty sure I could handle whatever it was alone. Plus, I'm good at multitasking.

Arriving at the corridor leading to her apartment, I saw someone I didn't expect to ever see again.

Max.

And he had Adrienne at gunpoint, the door to her apartment smashed open.

——————-

Adrienne POV:

I trembled uncontrollably.

Was Raelyn ever going to turn up?

Did I call the wrong person?

Maybe I was right, and she really doesn't care at all.

I crossed my fingers behind my back.

Max was studying me from across the hallway.

'Why shouldn't I shoot you.'

'I'-

'It was rhetorical.'

Oh. I'd always hated Max. Arrogant know-it-all.

'I'm just weighing my options here. I know you hired someone.'

'What?'

'To beat me up. Or did you convince Amelie to? Either way, you were at the heart of it. Little bitch.'

'I- I don't know what you're talking about.' I really didn't. I got that someone would want to beat Max up, but so randomly?

'Lying brat. Shall I just beat you up, make you feel like I did?'

'No. I swear it had nothing to do with me. Where were you when it happened?' I bit my lip. I was just trying to buy time, but it was only making my already unbearable ordeal worse.

'By my house.'

Oh come on Maxwell make an effort. You're about to shoot me after all.

The door behind him burst open suddenly. Raelyn stood panting, pointing a revolver straight at Max.

Fuck yea.

Max clearly didn't share my enthusiasm.

You.' Raelyn spat.

'Me?' Max asked, confused.

'Yes you dickhead. I already beat you up once, what the heck are you doing back here bothering my girl?'

I stared at her in shock. My girl? My stomach, previously jam-packed with fear, emptied, and the butterflies came back. Give me a break.

Raelyn was sweating. It looked like she'd been running. She was also dressed in a suit. It looked smoking hot, but I had other things on my mind.
Like the way her hair was slicked back with hair gel, and her lipstick was smeared down her chin.
And the guy still pointing a gun at my face.

Raelyn slowly moved forwards, and so did Max, keeping the barrel trained on me.

Perfect. Max lunged for me suddenly, and a shot rang out.

Max screamed in pain, nursing his leg.

I wondered whether my neighbours heard. If so, what had I done to make them hate me so much as to ignore my desperate situation. I was pulled out of my thought by Max, who had grabbed my arm and was directing the gun at me, again.

Raelyn looked on calmly, which didn't make me feel very calm. I glared at her.

'Why do you look so happy.'

'I'm not happy.'

'Yes you are. Don't lie.'

'I'm not.'

'Can you two stop bickering please?' Max began, turning his attention away from me for a split second. It was enough. I kicked upwards, hard.

Max screeched, and pulled the trigger.

I buckled over in pain, and fell to the ground. I heard Raelyn yell, and my vision became blotchy, and then finally faded away entirely.
