As I opened my eyes, the red led light of my phone burned through my dark bedroom like a tiny evil demon's eye. The thought brought a small smile to my lips. I reached for my little demon's phone imprisonment and turned on the screen. It met me with the blinding light of my lock screen and in white print showed me the time.
2:34
It was early, but I preferred the dark.
Slowly, my eyes adjusted to the brightness of the phone screen and I opened Kik. No new messages for me, which was good. I disliked talking to people.
I looked across my dark room to the window. A crescent moon shown a small sliver of pale light into my room through the black curtains. I smiled slightly.
Perfect night.
Throwing off the cocoon of blankets I had been wrapped in, I rolled from bed and stepped over to the mirror. My short dark hair was sticking up in different directions in the back and then was laying flat in the front. I used a comb to smooth it all down and then observed the state of the makeup on my face from the day before. It looked decent, so I slipped into black torn leggings, a short black skirt, and a black T-shirt. Then I quietly grabbed my combat boots and tiptoed to the side door and sat on the steps to put on my boots.
After the shoes were laced properly, I stepped off the last concrete step and began walking into the cold mist that covered the street. The cool night was still and quiet, making the city seem dead. There were no people on the streets and no lights in any windows. I walked a block or so down in a straight line on the sidewalk before turning to the narrow allies I knew so well, my combat boots making echoing thumps with every step.
Even the ally cats were nowhere to be seen that night. It was as still in the dark allies as it was back on the roads.
No people. No animals. No movement.
Just the stillness of the city and the quiet of the night. Sharp black shadows jutted out from buildings and lampposts and signs. What dim light came from the posts stayed on the roads and streets, but there,in the allies, it was just me and the blackness as I found my way to the graveyard of the old abandoned church.
The town was small and most of the tall buildings were on the eastern facing end. The shorter buildings of the western facing end were slums and abandoned buildings. There were only a few churches or graveyards in the city because the developers wanted more room to build places and the run down burial sites and churches didn't seem important to their picture of "the modern world."
But the ivy covered graves and short stone walls with black iron fences sticking threateningly out of the top provide a refuge for some people. People like me.
There's three of us in the city that go to the graveyard of the small church whose sign has fallen and name been long forgotten. There's seven words carved into the stone above the entryway that we use as its name, but no one else cares or knows.
When I reached the rusted gate to the graveyard, I looked about to make sure no one was around to see the goth girl slipping into the shadows of the old graveyard on Knull Street, for that would make them get the "eyesore" removed. My safehaven removed.
When no one was in the vicinity, I opened the gate with a small creak and slid into the yard. A whisper at my right broke the calm silence.
"Cat, over here."
It was coming from some large hedges that provided good cover (I knew from experience), and I recognized the voice to be a friend's.
"What? And where've you been, Drake?"
"No time to explain," he said in a hushed tone.
Drake jumped from the bushes and took my hand in his before pulling me down the overgrown path towards the abandoned chapel. Once at the door, Drake picked the lock with expert skill and entered.
I paused at the doorway and looked up at the words that headed the entrance. In Anglo Saxon, were the words "He who passes will meet the Antichrist."
I followed Drake in through the doors. They closed behind me with a thud.
