If only I knew.
If only I knew my life would forever be changed, as I laugh with my friends one winters night.
I have seen some unspeakable things in my short twenty-five years of life but this, this one moment will never erase its self from my mind.
I could not forget.
The blood.
The screams.
The cruel, cold eyes.
It all started on the evening of Tina and Mitch's engagement party. They had gone all out with a fully catered event at their swanky new city penthouse apartment.
I made my way through the already crowded dance floor looking for my boyfriend. We had been going out for a month now, and experiencing the honeymoon stage of our relationship. I was always on cloud nine when he was around.
"Alyson!" Someone called from behind before strong arms engulfed me. Turning around I grinned up at Steven.
"Hey babe." I lightly kiss his smooth lips before heading off to greet the other happy couple.
Moving swiftly through the vast apartment I wave excitedly spotting a dazzling Tina, in a glittery mid-length dress. We nearly fall over as I hug her, giggling lightly as we pull apart, and lean into our respected partners. I couldn't be happier to share this moment with them.
"You are just in time," Tina beams handing us two very full champagne glasses, "it's toast time!" Hand in hand Tina leads us back into the main room.
"And cake time too right?" I joke bumping Tina's shoulder as the lights briefly flicker before cutting out completely.
An ear piercing scream that shattered my very soul erupted throughout the house as a loud bang rings out. It was a sound that could never be forgotten, a sound that stays with you throughout life. When the lights finally came back no one dared to move. My pace pals as I noticed blood coating one side of my dress. Dropping to my knees I grab at the body on the floor letting out an anguished cry. No, this can't be happening, not now, not Tina.
The house erupts into chaos as the other guest panic, all trying to leave as more gun shots ring out. People fall like dominoes their blood painting the marble floors.
The man I thought I was falling in love with, laughed cruelly lowering his gun. I freeze in place as Steven's icy stare finds mine, and he stalks towards me. My attempts to escape is futile, as Steven violently grabs me around the waist flinging my body into the nearest wall. My head spins as he drags me up, pinning me in place. He puts the gun against my cheek moving his lips to my ear.
"My love, Tina and I shared a secret," I whimper in response, "I once had a wife, and she killed her." My heart stops, hot tears streak down my face. I shriek as Steven turns the gun on himself, leaving me alone amongst the dead.
