The car ride was mainly silent. Dad kept his dark eyes on the rode, and I stared out the window at the tall, dark evergreens. The thick wood was towering, and the windy road was one of the only for miles.
It was a dreary day, the dark clouds looming over the forest. The road was damp, causing small droplets of water to gather on my window as they were disturbed by the car wheels.
I twitched my ears toward the forest, where I could already see smoke billowing from the treetops.
Dad cleared his throat, causing me to twist in my seat to face him. "Ashton," he said, his voice slightly shaky. "I just want you to know that I'm very proud of you. And... I know your mother would be too."
I smiled a sad smile at him, my lips trembling with nerves. My whole demeanor felt oddly... shaky.
Dad set his hand on my shoulder, giving me a supportive glance. "I know this is scary, Ash, but I know you can get through it."
I nodded my head at his words, the sinking feeling in my stomach not lifted. I felt too sick to reply to him with words. Dad spotted the small reflector of the side of the road and veered off suddenly, causing me to brace against my seat belt.
"Sorry," he murmured as the car jolted.
Dad followed small flags attached to trunks of trees as he navigated the compact Nissan through curves of the forest. The ride was bumpy, since the path we took was unknown. The sudden change of scenery only sped up my heartbeat. I could hear my soon to be pack-mates as they waited for my arrival. My arrival. My arrival to my first shifting.
Suddenly the glow of the bonfire was visible through the trees, causing my dad to slow down considerably. He must've been nervous too. He didn't know any of the pack members. My mother had been a wolf, and my father her mate. My mother passed away shortly after my birth, leaving him to raise me. Which he made the decision to do away from the pack.
But, in order for me to shift and become a wolf, I had to be reunited with my pack.
Dad parked the car a ways away from the bonfire, hoping not to attract too much attention. The wolves around the fire had all run to the woods, and even their un-shifting mates had traveled by foot.
Dad paused in his seat, obviously reluctant to get out of his seat. I swung open my car door and slid out, my bare feet hitting damp foliage. I was dressed in an old T-shirt and denim shorts Id cut, knowing that I needed to bring invaluable things to be ripped from my body as I shifted forms.
I walked toward the clearing where the bonfire was, Dad following behind at a slower pace. I pushed past a branch and stepped into the firelight, where many dark-skinned people surrounded the center of the clearing, their one common attribute obvious; their pack markings.
They were all silenced as they noticed me. I breathed heavily, the thick Washington air filling my dry lungs. And then, my pack-mates erupted into howls.
