WHAT IS THE IDENTITY OF A BORN AGAIN PERSON (A CHRISTIAN)?
Like we clearly understood that the identity of a thing is concealed in its seal, so does every born again individual has this unique seal that GOD has placed on him or her. This seal is upon us, even you who just joined the family. This seal is the sweet HOLY SPIRIT Himself; GOD Himself. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that HOLY SPIRIT of promise,
As an adopted child purchased from this wicked world in our sins with the precious blameless blood of CHRIST (1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price… 1 Peter 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot), GOD sealed us with a legal identity that we are HIS. The HOLY SPIRIT is the seal of our salvation, containing our full description and also rendering protection to us until CHRIST returns to pick us on the shelf of this world.OUR IDENTITY
Making that clear that our true identity is in/ with the HOLY SPIRIT, it will be sage of us to look and discover in HIM the writing He engraved on our heart because of HIS presence in us.
An identity has four vital elements;
Name
Origin
Manner or character
Constituent or compositionOUR TRUE NAME
Name is a significant aspect of an identification card or paper. A name gives the uniqueness of a product or person. It even provides a knowledge of the purpose (use) of the artifact. As a new creation, we are in this world whom the world has never seen before, our name speaks much loud for us just as every name does for its responder. GOD deals so much with names. HE’S very particular and pays much attention to names. HE never works with any or uses any man whose name does not firstly fit into the purpose HE requires of him. Name is therefore very essential when purpose is concerned. So to say, a change of every name is a change of purpose. Every name attracts its related qualities, and qualities are possessed for every purpose. A change of name is a change of content (qualities) and consequently a change in purpose.
We see this in the story of father Abraham, whose name has to be changed by GOD. Genesis 17:5a Neither shall thy name anymore be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham… Why? To fit him in the field of purpose he was needed in. for a father of many nations have I made thee. Genesis 17:5b
Was that important? Oh! yes. If not, GOD wouldn’t have been so concern about it. Jacob to Israel is another explicit example of a change of name as a requirement required for the fulfillment of purpose. Genesis 32:28 And he said, thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
The name Jacob which he responded to made him fell into trouble always because he lived exactly acting what the name spelled; a sup-planter. Genesis 27:36 And he said, is not he rightly named Jacob? For he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
And nobody likes to be cheated. Hence, Jacob acquired enemies, first was his brother Esau (Genesis 27:41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, the days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob) and another enemy is Laban his uncle. Names affect lives, behavior, character. Thus, the moment the Bible pulled the story of the changing of his name to Israel, we see an immediate effect on his life. His brother, who was filled with all anger of which he was right to be angry, totally melt and a whole calmness rested in his heart as though he ever longed hard to hug his brother. Genesis 33:4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
Physically his servants following him might probably be amazed because of the changed in their master’s (Esau) manner towards his supposed enemy. What they didn’t know was the truth that a change had taken place forehand in the realm of identity, which effect they were all watching. A change of name is an immediate change of circumstances.
Apostle Paul who was known as Saul, really revealed the truth of what names can do. Bearing the name Saul, he was popularly identified for his killing and torture of the children of GOD. But with the power of grace, which affected his name to be changed to Paul, caused a well-known terrorist to be transformed to a forever remembered preacher. KJV, Acts 9:15,20-21
15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. 21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
A change of name causes many changes.
What then is your name as a born again person; remember names welcome a newborn baby into this world? Such makes a name ceremony adorable. So, it is when we are re born into a different family. A name must welcome you into that family. What then is your name, my fellow brother or sister? Which name welcomes you into the household of GOD’S beloved children.
What name do you have in the book of life? Is it Peter Thompson? Or Charity Wendy? What if someone else also has the same name as you, who then will it be if only one of such is found?
Well, shockingly such names are names given to us by our earthly parents which sometimes GOD even changes. This reveals that GOD does and will not recognize us by our earthly borne names. What names therefore apply eternally to us?
John 3:1 “…that we should be called the sons of GOD…” Romans 8:14 “For as many as are led by the SPIRIT of GOD, they are the sons of GOD”.
Our true name is the very words “children of GOD”. We use this a lot, but has its meaning and every power tied to it dawn on us? How well do we operate under this name? This is more than just a mere title. This is more far than any office even in the ministry. When we finally meet our LORD JESUS CHRIST, HE isn’t going to address us by whatsoever title we had right here like; doctor, professor, pastor, prophet or apostle, but the very word SONS OF GOD because that’s who we are irrespective of our traces, color, language over here. This name joins us all from all over the globe into the unified tribe of GOD HIMSELF, where HE is the Father of all and all others, HIS children.
The name is given to us right from the very time we join the family that’s, the day we acknowledge JESUS as LORD. And so has its corresponding effect been commission in our life. We are children of GOD, we call GOD our father and that’s how the relationship has to be every time, everywhere. That’s why our brother Apostle Paul, under the ministration of the HOLY SPIRIT, clarified it for us in his epistle that we have received the spirit of son ship, in other words, we have received the seal of son ship. The Spirit, which is the very SPIRIT of GOD, has identities us as children of GOD. And for that reason, we are heirs with CHRIST, co-heirs with CHRIST. What does that mean; we are princes, next to the throne of GOD. Who is Jesus? As He is, so are we (1 John 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world).
WHO IS JESUS IN RELATION TO US
HE was a son of a man. John 1:51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
A prophecy came about the birth of JESUS from Prophet Isaiah. He said a child is born, a son is given (Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given…). The visit of CHRIST to the earth was first welcomed by an earthly nuclear family. And from a toddler to His 30th birthday, that family was HIS close relation. HE had a father, mother and other siblings. Everyone who will come into this world (earth) will definitely have to be welcomed by a family. And JESUS had one himself, something we all also have. He was called a son of man to label Him as one who is not different from us. One who is subjected just like any human.
HE is the beloved child of GOD. Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
The transition of JESUS from a common son of man to son of GOD took place the very moment JESUS went through the process of baptism (transition). He was announced as the beloved child of GOD at the point of transition. JESUS came to show us the right way and manner in which we are to relate with GOD. HE came to be a model of how we are to relate with GOD. Going for baptism to show us how important it is as the symbol of transition, we are to also get the truth that immediately after our new birth, we are being given our names. And that’s MY BELOVED CHILD, just as JESUS was called.
HE is our brother. Matthew 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Brothers have the same fathers. If HE was declared as the son of GOD, and we are also called, so then we can refer to him as a brother. Therefore, JESUS was not wrong when HE said HE will not call us servants anymore but friends; John 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
Servants relate with a king. And that was who we were. In the past, GOD revealed HIMSELF as a KING, and we have to relate to HIM as such. But presently, we have the understanding that GOD is more than that to us. HE IS OUR FATHER. HE is still OUR KING, but we are urged to behave more like children towards HIM because that’s accurately who we are.
