Dey has no memories beyond when she was three years old (she approximates this). She woke up in a forest in Japan, all alone, and wandered around, lost, for several days. She was found by an older man named Hirikawa Tatsuya, who ran a dojo in a nearby village. He took her in and raised her, teaching her martial arts as well.
She had two 'siblings', the children of Hirikawa-sensei: Miyu and Souske. The three of them grew up together.
When Hirikawa-sensei died, he left the dojo to his oldest son, Souske, and Dey lived there for many years, teaching tessenjutsu and enjoying the quiet life as she watched her family's generations grow up.
After Souske died in a fire, his son, Kazuhito, took over the dojo. Kazuhito blamed Dey for his father's death even though she'd had nothing to do with it, and kicked her out.
