Diamond
The house was silent after the wake. The sun had set, casting long shadows on the floor and walls. Faint light from the street lamps seeped through the curtains, creating a dim glow. The air was heavy with the smell of flowers, reminding me of the day's sadness and loss.
I wandered through the house, my footsteps echoing softly on the wooden floors. Every room seemed to hold a memory, a fragment of the past that felt both comforting and haunting. The furniture stood still, like silent witnesses to the grief that had unfolded.
Jamilla sat at the table, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea. The dim light from the overhead lamp cast a warm, soft glow over her tired face. I joined her, feeling the weight of the day settle into my bones.
“How are you holding up?” I asked.
She shrugged, feeling a lump form in my throat. “I’m not sure. It still doesn’t feel real.”
I nodded. “It’s going to take time. Grief is a strange thing. It hits you in waves.”
She sighed, wrapping her hands around her mug of tea. “I just keep thinking about all the moments we shared. It’s hard to imagine life without him.”
“He would want you to be strong,” I said softly. “To keep moving forward.”
Her voice cracked, and tears started falling from her eyes. “I know. It’s just... hard.”
I reached across the table, giving her hand a comforting squeeze. “We’re here for you, Jamilla. You’re not alone in this.”
She smiled weakly, grateful for my support. “Thank you, Diamond. That means a lot.”
We sat in silence for a while, sipping our tea and letting the quiet moments stretch between us. It was a small comfort, but in that moment, it was enough.

In the living room, Sajan and Krystyna sat quietly, the room dimly lit by a single lamp. Their faces were drawn and tired, the weight of the day evident in their weary expressions.
I cleared my throat, trying to break the silence. “Do you want some tea?” I asked, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the stillness.
Sajan glanced at Krystyna before looking at me. “We should be going,” he said softly. “It’s getting late.”
Krystyna nodded. “Yes, it’s been a long day.”
A pang of sadness hit me. “Alright. Thank you for being here,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
Sajan stood up and hugged me tightly. “Take care of yourself, sis.”
Krystyna joined the hug, her arms wrapping around us both. “Call us if you need anything,” she said.
“I will,” I promised, though the words felt empty.
We walked to the door together. The cool night air rushed in as Sajan opened it. They stepped out into the darkness, their figures soon blending with the shadows. I watched them until they disappeared down the path.
Closing the door, I turned back to the empty house. I sighed and made my way to the kitchen. The tea kettle was still on the stove from earlier. I decided to make myself another cup, hoping it would bring some comfort.
As the water boiled, I looked around the kitchen. It felt different now, lonelier. The laughter and chatter from before seemed like a distant memory. I poured the hot water into a cup and sat at the table, watching the steam rise.
I sipped my tea slowly, letting the warmth spread through me. The house was quiet, but my mind was loud with thoughts and memories. I missed my parents so much and wondered how I would manage without them.
After finishing my tea, I washed the cup and put it away. I turned off the lights and headed to my room. The silence followed me, but I tried to find some comfort in the familiar surroundings.
Lying in bed, I closed my eyes and let the memories wash over me. The house was full of echoes from the past, and I knew it would take time to adjust. But I was determined to keep moving forward, one day at a time.

I entered the kitchen, drawn by the worried voices of my nieces and nephew. Eris and Ciarinise were at the table, staring at an open journal. Tianna sat nearby, looking tense. The air felt heavy, as if something big was about to happen.
"What's happening?" I asked, my voice rushed with concern.
Eris nodded towards the journal. "We found something that could change everything," he said, looking serious.
Ciarinise locked eyes with me, determined but uneasy. "It's about a curse," she added.
A curse? It sounded like a fairy tale. But their eyes were serious. I moved closer, staring at the journal.
Eris took a deep breath. "Tema Andrea, our great-grandfather's lover, cast a curse," he explained.
Ciarinise continued, "She did it to keep him loyal, to make him stay with her."
My mind spun. A curse? This can't be real. But here it was, in our family journal.
Tianna looked up at me, worry in her eyes. "Aunt Diamond, it's true. We found it all written here."
I nodded, trying to stay calm. "Show me what you found."
Eris turned to a page with an excerpt from the journal. I listened intently, feeling a mixture of disbelief and growing realization as the words unfolded before me.
Eris’s voice carried the weight of the curse as he read aloud, "The curse shall bind generations yet unborn, ensnaring their hearts in misfortune, entwining their lives with the consequences of the past."
Ciarinise's voice quivered slightly as she continued, her eyes never leaving my face. "As time goes on, the curse's influence will tighten its grip, casting a shadow over the lives of those who bear the bloodline."
A shiver ran down my spine as the words sank in, as if the darkness of the curse was creeping into my understanding. The impact of the curse felt heavy, as if the weight of generations past had suddenly descended upon us.
Tianna leaned back, eyes wide in realization. "This... this is serious. We need to do something."
Eris closed the journal, his expression resolute as he looked at me. "We can't let this curse control our lives any longer," he declared, his words cutting through the tension hanging in the room.
Ciarinise's determination matched Eris's as she nodded in agreement, her eyes burning with resolve. "We need to find a way to break this curse, to free ourselves and the generations after us from its grasp."
A surge of emotions welled up within me—fear, anger, and a fierce determination of my own. The curse had woven itself into our family's history, shaping our lives in ways we hadn’t even known. But now, with this newfound knowledge, we had the power to rewrite our destinies.
I met their gazes with a determined glint in my eye. "We're in this together. We'll uncover the truth behind this curse and find a way to break its hold, no matter what challenges come our way."
I nodded, a soft smile playing on her lips. "You have my support. We’ll face this together, as a family."
We exchanged looks, understanding the challenge ahead and our shared commitment. In that moment, a strong bond formed between us, one that would guide us in breaking the curse haunting our family for generations.
