Pain flooded through his body as he looked into his eyes. Those beautiful blue eyes, ones that captivated his gaze and rendered him breathless. His own green eyes started to close, as his life came to an end.
Our story doesn't start there, heavens no. It starts with Wetherby. The pirate captain. Now, this man isolates himself from everyone around him, his expressions usually stoic.
"Captain! The mermaids want us to head to shore, they want to have a few words with you." A gruff voice was heard on the other side of the heavy oak door that Captain Wetherby Kendall was sat behind. Letting out a sigh, he stood up and opened the door, leaning against the frame of the door.
"What are you standing there for then? Follow their directions. If Kaia wants to speak with us, one of you has fucked up in some way. Or she wants to take the piss. Either one"
Letting a sigh escape his lips, Wetherby rubbed his eyes, walking out onto the deck to watch the mermaids that were guiding the ship. Noticing a flash of emerald green, he raised an eyebrow. So Kaia did need them. As carefree of she was, she never usually lead them out this far, let alone stick with them.
Sensing the severity of the situation, he raised his gaze to the moon. It was full today, the reflection on the sea calming him to his core. He loved that sight. It was always there, the only stable thing in his life. The sun and moon.
Rubbing his temples, the captain looked toward the island they were quickly approaching. Something in his gut told him something was about to change, maybe he should give orders to leave. The mermaids would be furious, but change just wasn't a good thing in his life.
Deciding to just stick it out, Wetherby simply strode back to his cabin, shutting the door and pulling on a jacket. The air had bitten at his face, the early winter breeze chilling him.
Feeling the ship stop beneath his feet, he went back outside, following his crew off of the ship and onto the beach. Walking over to Kaia, he had his head tilted in a manner that spoke of wanting to know how urgent the problem was. That was when Kaia swam as far forward as she could, pushing a damaged boat in front of her. The mermaid's silence told him all he needed to know as he looked upon the unconscious figure laying in the boat.
Pulling it to shore, he picked up the man, laying his down and trying to shake him awake. His eyebrows were furrowed in concern, his bottom lip caught in between his teeth. Looking away for a second, his gaze returned back to the man's face when electric blue eyes looked up at him.
Moving back, Wetherby let out a sigh of relief, knowing that the man was still alive. Maybe dehydrated and weak, but alive regardless. Inclining his head towards the mermaids, he scooped up the man who was still laying on the sand.
Letting out a groan, the mystery man looked up at the captain. Jade green eyes returned his gaze, the two men caught up in time. Breathless, they just stared.
Something seemed to click in their heads, but they didn't know what. Something compelled them to move closer to each other, their eyes fluttering closed.
Just before their lips could meet, Kaia threw a stick at the two before swimming away, the spell that held the two men together shattered and became lost in the cold night air.
Both men had a pink tint on their cheeks, unsure of what came over them both. Despite their obliviousness, they knew that whatever that was, they wanted to know what would've happened if Kaia hadn't interrupted them.
Clearing his throat, Wetherby exhaled, his words soft
"What's your name, and what happened to you? You're very skeletal."
The blue eyed man spoke in a dry tone, his mouth dry enough that his tongue was swelling in his mouth
   "Fenton. Fenton Beckwith. What's yours?"
"Wetherby Kendall. Captain Wetherby Kendall, mind you. If you're going to be staying on my ship, it'll do you good to keep that in mind. I'll give you time to recover, but then you will be put to work on my ship. Without further ado, let's get you some water to drink. And don't give me some bullshit about drinking seawater, surely you aren't that stupid."
Fenton cleared his already dry throat and looked away, Wetherby groaning in exasperation at how idiotic Fenton was.
Carrying the man to his cabin, he laid him down so he was able to grab him some water, a bit of food and a change of clothes. Despite the garments being Wetherby's own, Fenton didn't seem to mind all that much, anything worked, especially as his own clothes were bringing a chill that sat deep in his bones.
"Thanks, uh, Wetherby? Captain? I don't know how I should refer to you" Fenton ran his fingers through his hair, his tone questioning, whereas Wetherby sighed in exasperation.
"It's captain to you. Got it?" That's all he had time for before he went back outside to ponder the events that had occurred.
Kaia had been watching the two interact up until they disappeared behind that door. Her jet black hair was drying in the breeze, her tail splashing in the water. Growing slightly bored, she slid off of the rock she was perched on, swimming into the depths below.
As the waters darkened, she sped off, a little too zoned out to notice she was on a collision path with an unfamiliar face.
As expected, she crashed into the siren, the two pausing in their apologies to look at each other. Kaia's grey eyes found the siren's own crimson red ones. A blush spread across her shoulders, her raven hair tangling with the strawberry blonde of the siren in front of her.
"I'm sorry, I didn't.. I didn't mean to crash into you like that." Kaia breathed, completely drawn in by the siren.
"Don't apologise, I wasn't paying much attention either, we're both to blame, but as long as neither of us were hurt, that's all that matters, is it not?" Their voice was soft and melodic, reeling Kaia in even more with every word.
"You're right, I'd suppose. I'm Kaia, by the way, what's your name?"
"I haven't told you my name? I'm Eden, little mermaid" Eden's hands gently moved to cup Kaia's face, the mermaid leaning into the siren's touch, completely hooked onto them.
Their tails tangled around each other as they moved even closer to one another, their lips meeting, brushing against each other hesitantly at first, before hands were tangled in the other's hair, Eden's hands on Kaia's hips, holding her close.
After a few minutes, they pulled away, adoration and curiosity lighting up their eyes, the two not even needing to speak to convey how quickly and hard they'd just fallen for each other.
Feeling eyes on them, they turned to see who was watching, April watching with her jaw practically on the sea floor.
"You've just met, and you couldn't keep off of each other long enough to know each other's favourite colour?" April was dumbstruck as she laughed, barrelling toward the two and knocking them apart.
A couple of sirens approached the trio, their hair pulled back. One of the two, Lyra, spoke:
"Stop pratting about, me and Lana have been looking for you, Eden. Niko wishes to speak to you, something about you only luring in humans who aren't accepting of those who aren't the same as them"
"Oh come on, they're the best kind to fuck with! And they deserve it" Eden huffed, rolling their eyes and pouting as their new girlfriend swam back up to the surface, presumably to speak with her pirate friends again.
JD was leaning over the railings, their hair windswept, whilst Eros was preparing to smack them over the head with a stick that sea had found. In retrospect, JD should've remembered their best friend was a chaotic little shit who would cause as much chaos as sea could.
Raising its new stick above its head, Eros managed to accidentally whack Wetherby instead, the captain just standing there in confusion before he just scoffed and walked away. Eros shrugged and managed to hit his intended target square on the head, causing them to twirl around fast enough to lose their balance and faceplant on the floor.
Ellie watched this happen, dropping to the floor and laughing hard enough tears fell down her cheeks. Upon seeing her laughter, Eros gave a low bow, before going in for round two, holding its stick like a sword, going to poke JD in the stomach, only stopping when Dean picked sea up and threw him onto the shoulder, carrying him away, confiscating his stick.
"Stop hitting people with sticks, Eros. There is a reason you're not allowed weapons, now don't make me tell Cyprus that you're hitting people again." Dean rolled his eyes, chuckling at Eros stiffening at the mention of its older brother.
