The three of us are walking in the woods when we hear a faint voice up ahead.
"Hello? Is someone up there?" The voice echoes.
The voice leads the three of us to a significant hole in the middle of the woods. We slowly inch towards the vast pit.
"Just leave me alone." The man says, looking down at his lap.
"Chet?" Xavier and I shout down in sync as Xavier flashes his light into the pit.
"Theo, Xavier? Oh, thank god."
"What the hell are you doin' down there, man?"
"I'm dying! What does it look like I'm doing? There's a stake through my shoulder, I can't move. You got to get me out of here." Chet cries up at us.
Trevor sighs, straightening his body before looking over at Xavier and me.
"All right. I'm coming down." Xavier calls down to Chet, looking me in the eyes and handing me his flashlight.
Chet sobs loudly as Trevor and I slowly help Xavier down into the pit of sharp stakes. Xavier drops down the rest of the way. Both Trevor and I pause, waiting to hear a cry, but I let out a breath of relief as Xavier starts moving toward Chet.
"I thought I was done. I thought that was it." Chet continues to cry.
"It's okay. Everything's gonna be okay." Xavier says, comforting Chet as he moves through the maze of stakes sticking out of the ground.
Trevor and I watch Xavier squat down next to Chet to see the severity of his injury.
"Damn, That looks gnarly."
"It was him. It was Jingles. Ray... he-he fell in here, too, but... he left me." Chet sobs.
"Ray told us you got separated," Xavier explains, confused.
"He's got issues, man. He's got serious fucking issues." Chet cries to Xavier.
Xavier reaches over to feel the wound as Chet hisses in pain.
"I, uh, I feel like we're gonna need a real doctor down here to get you off this," Xavier hesitates, concerned.
All of a sudden, Trevor and I hear twigs snapping next to us, tearing our attention away from the boys in the hole. I look at Trevor with wide eyes. He grabs my lower back, pushing us as close as we can to the edge of the pit.
"Shh, shh, shh. Someone's coming." Trevor whispers down at the two boys below.
We look around as the sound grows closer.
"Hurry up, hurry up," I whisper.
"It's him. It's Jingles. Y-You gotta get me out of here. You gotta get..."
"Well, I've never done this before. I don't want to kill him," Xavier whisper shouts, looking up at us.
"Better you than Jingles," Trevor says, panicked.
Xavier turns back around, looking at Chet.
"If I kill you, I'm so sorry."
"Just get me off of it," Chet begs.
"On three. Okay?" Xavier looks down at Chet hovering above him, gripping his shoulders.
He places one hand under his right arm holding his back shoulder where the stake has penetrated, and the other on his left shoulder.
"Ready?" Xavier asks as he adjusts his stance.
"No, no, no, wait, wait, wait."
"Three," Xavier pulls Chet up clean off the Stake.
