The Soldier and The Poet

Phlox walked into the bar, he was a simple poet, Brown bushy, unkempt hair. He had a large frame and looked quite masculine for his occupation. He was wearing his usual brown suit for he had just come back from a meeting at the library to attempt to list his books. Phlox was quite nervous since this was a new town to him. He was traveling from town to town to list his books, none being successful, his books were quite controversial for they mostly challenged political affairs and views, and because many of them had homosexual leads. Phlox could hear the bar from outside, which was mostly bad music and laughing, though this is what induced him to enter the bar. He was not very interested in asking what the bar was or any affiliations. He figured he should try and learn it himself. As he entered the bar the sound erupted causing Phlox to flinch and cover his ears. Though once he got used to the sound he noticed a very beautiful woman coming up to him. As he looked around he noticed other women wearing the same outfit as her. She had a very nice curve to her waist and a very nice face. She had long blond hair and her face was quite beautiful and smooth.

“Hello! Welcome to Murphy’s Fine and Dine, would you like a table or a spot at the bar?” The woman asked, her voice was a bit deep and rough for a womens, but Phlox decided to see past that.

“Bar spot please.” Phlox replied, blushing slightly.

“All right! Follow me.” She replied cheerfully. Phlox followed closely behind the woman for he could feel stares coming from behind him. He stared towards the ground and followed the feet of the woman leading him, so that he did not have to look at the faces of everyone. The women lead Phlox towards a seat at the bar near the end and set a menu and a napkin down for Phlox.

“I am Alstro and I will be your server for today. Are there any drinks I can get you right away?” The woman said kindly.

“Uh, just water please.”

“Lame.” She giggled before walking off and grabbing Phlox a water. Phlox skimmed over the menu while drinking his water, not reading much, mostly thinking about his waiter. Whether he should ask her out or not. He figured if he asked her out it would either go one of two ways, either she would agree and they would meet her somewhere, or she would reject him miserably. He decided two things at once, first that the second option is most likely what would happen, and second that he should order BBQ wings from the menu. He saw Alstro walking towards him which made Phlox quite nervous.

“Have you decided on anything?” Alstro asked politely.

“Ah! Yes, may I have the BBQ wings, please?” I replied, slightly jitterish.

“You know, you're quite the cute fella aren’t you!”

“Huh! Ah, yes, wait no– thank you.” Alstro giggled at the fact that I could barely get a sentence out, and the fact that I was red as a tomato.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what do you do for a living?” She asked kindly.

“I’m a writer. Though I don’t sell much.” I laughed. Alstro was slightly taken aback since Phlox did not look anything like a writer.

“Would you like to meet up sometime?” Alstro asked.

“Oh? Where would you like to meet?”

“The boathouse by Parodia Lake. Do you know which one I am talking about?”

“Yes, I am quite familiar with the boathouse.”

“Wonderful! How does Friday sound? 9:00 AM?” Alstro quizzed. I nodded a Yes back as Alstro ran to get my food.

Phlox was sitting on the morning train next to an old man who was sleeping peacefully. Every now and then the man would slide closer to Phlox in his seat, to which Phlox responded by sliding farther away from him. It was quite an uncomfortable ride, so when the train stopped at Phlox's stop he quickly gathered his stuff and exited. The fresh air was wonderful to Phlox and he quickly took a sigh of relief. He started towards the boat house which was not far off, only about a half-mile or so. He was wearing a white button up and black dress pants which caused many stares from strangers. Phlox looked back down at his feet and followed the path he had walked many times before. He heard a few whistles from women and men alike which made him quite uncomfortable and made him hurry to the boat house.

"Hello!" He heard a familiar voice say from in front of him. He looked up and saw a man who looked much like Alstro but with short hair cut neatly to the back of his neck and a rugged suit.

"Alstro?" Phlox asked, surprised.

"Tis I Mr. Poet." Alstro replied, smirking. "Surprised?"

"Well definitely but I can't say I mind." Phlox laughed.

"Come with me!" Alstro said excitedly as he grabbed Phlox's hand and pulled him to a blanket with a bunch of food and flowers on and around it.

"Well if I knew it was going to be a picnic I certainly would have brought food."

"I wanted it to be a surprise!" Alstro said, pouting. Phlox laughed and sat down next to Alstro. Alstro handed me a sandwich as he took a bite off of his. "What kind of books do you write?" Alstro asked through chewing. In surprise Phlox choked on his sandwich causing him to hit his chest.

"Books."

"Oh. You write those kinds of books" Alstro replied teasingly. Blush spread across Phlox's face.

"NO!" Phlox yelled in embarrassment, covering his face.

"May I kiss you?" Alstro asked politely. Phlox looked at the ground before nodding his head. Alstro leaned forward and gave Phlox a kiss. It was quick, but it felt like living an eternity surrounded by gold to Phlox and Alstro. Alstro placed his hand on Phlox's face.

"I am going off to war tomorrow." Alstro said tears were swelling in his eyes.

"Oh." Phlox replied, looking down at the grass around them.

"But, the moments I had with you were the happiest of my life." Alstro flung into Phlox's arms and they just sat there, hugging one another, enjoying each other's embrace.

Sorry this one was short, but I rather enjoyed writing it. For funny I decided to make Phlox write gay erotica as one of his main writings, but he mostly makes money off of his poems which is why he is known as a poet instead of an author. This was also written to be in like a midway time space. Being gay is accepted but it is still rather controversial and homosexual people were treated very poorly.
