Kyle's driver turns off of the main road and heads toward Black Water Academy with the moonlight leading our way. I hadn't planned on spending the morning with him much less the whole day but it didn't have much of a choice.
What started as breakfast turned into a shopping trip filled with him trying on new suits for his father's next fundraiser. After the long excruciating hours of him asking me, "How does this one look?" We eventually went to lunch. Then it was a movie, one with me hugging the opposite side of my chair just to keep distance between us and constantly removing his hand every time he tried to touch me. After that, a silent and awkward walk through the park and a stop at his father's office where I waited in the car for god knows how long and finally dinner before it was time for me to return to school.
"What's going on with you?" Kyle asks dryly from the shadow of the back seat beside me.
I shrug and continue staring out the window. "Nothing."
"You've been distant all day."
"I'm always distant."
"Exactly," he snaps and grabs my arm, forcing me to face him. "Our parents expect us to announce our engagement after you graduate but no one is going to believe us if you cringe every time I touch you."
I yank my arm from his grip. "Then stop trying to touch me."
With a sigh, he rubs the bridge of his nose. "Is there someone else?"
Biting my tongue, I turn back to the window.
"Your purity was part of the agreement, or did you forget that?"
I laugh at that, imagining all the impure things I've done with Hunter in our dreams.
"It's not funny, Crystal!"
Shooting him a look over my shoulder, I ask, "Can you honestly say you haven't done anything with other girls since the agreement was made?"
His guilty gaze drops to his lap.
"Exactly."
"Are you jealous?" he asks.
"Not even a little bit."
The car pulls up in front of the main building and stops, but when I try to open the door, the locks click and keep me in.
"Is it serious...with this other guy?" Kyle asks with the slightest edge to his voice.
I consider denying it. Lying to him if only to get away quicker. But there's no point. "Yes."
He releases a growl that sounds both angry, frustrated, and kind of weak if I'm honest. "Whoever he is, he'll never be able to give you what I can. You could ruin an easy and luxurious future if you break the agreement terms with him. I'm twice the man he is but you'll throw everything away for that?"
His words ignite a fire in my veins that has my blood boiling. He doesn't even know Hunter yet he's so sure he's better. And why? Because his family has money and connections. Worthless shit that doesn't mean a thing in the end.
