The second I get off the bus at the middle school, I am looking for Blain, I find him at the bench by the front of the building and nothing stops us as we run to each other and hug for the longest time (for 11-year-olds anyway) even though we did see each other yesterday. We Sit on the bench and just take in the huge idea of finally being in middle school before the bell rings indicating the doors opening for class.
My first hour is kind of boring, but this whole day will be boring because it will be all expectations and rules, but I can at least tell the class will be interesting, it's a woodworking class. We tour the shop, there are huge slabs of wood all along one wall and all sorts of sanders, saws, and other tools. There is a separate little closet room full of paints.
My second hour is one of the high school classes and I can tell it's going to be hard, but I also know I'll be able to do it. The teacher goes over what formulas we will learn and what algebra really is, obviously along with class expectations and rules and she goes over the rubric. I also like this class because Blain is in it.
Next is my art class. I can already tell I'll love this teacher, she is really nice and instead of doing all the typical things, she has us start our first project which is to make a drawing that encapsulates us and shows who we are as people. I like it and I want to do it good, I spend the most time I ever have at starting a drawing ever and it looks pretty good so far.
Blain is also in this class, the class I was most excited about, English. We go over the reading list and the big projects he's going to have us do, I like how he says all of this so that nothing is a surprise or feels like a lot, I can tell I'll love this class, the books seem really interesting.
During lunch, I sit with Blaine, Collins, and Freja, we chose the spot outside on the stairs that go to where the other kids go and play at the field and lead back up to the school.
This is the first year ill be able to take choir and the teacher seems really nice and that shell is good, and I mean I hope so if she's going to have us all through middle and high school. I sit next to Freja, I miss her too, and Collins is on the other side of me, the three of us talk like we've been at the same school forever and I had never moved, it's nice.
My science class will be fun, this year we get to start doing bigger projects and reactions, it's right before chemistry class, the counselor last year had me take this one too because I was a little ahead in science too. The kids in the class seem okay and the teacher seems okay.
My last class of the day is history, I know I'm going to hate the class, but the teacher is at least really nice and Blain is by me too, the teacher talks for a couple minutes about her expectations, then knowing 11-year-olds and it is the end of the day on the first day, we won't pay attention much long after that, so I and Blain mess around with each other for the rest of the class.
Blain and I found out were in the same Homeroom so he walks me to grab my bag and thing and I walk him, then we walk to the class. When the 15 minutes are over, he walks me to my bus and we hug before I get on and he goes to find his dad's car.
I call him the second I get home and as my mom is asking me "how was your first day, Goobs?" Using the name she'd called me since I was a baby.
"It was good, be out in a min, talking to Blaine," I say as I walk into my room, shutting my door.
"Hey, what's up?" He answers my call
"Nothing just wanted to talk to you and see how your day went," I say, setting my bag down and sitting at my desk, starting to get my sheets of paper out and the little bit of homework I got that will be really easy.
"Mine was good, I can tell it's going to be a good year," he says on the other end of the line, I can hear that he's also getting his stuff out of his bag based on the sound in the background.
"I can too, I'm so glad we have so many classes together, I wasn't expecting that" I start writing out the get to know me paragraph for English.
We stay on call for a little while longer until my mom calls me to dinner.
"So, tell me how it was," my mom asks after she sets my dinner in front of me "We're your friends all there?"
She knew how hard moving was on me because of having to lose them for those couple of years."Yeah, they all were, I had like 4 classes with Blain, but I can't sit by him in choir because we're different vocal ranges and all that, but it's okay because I sit by Collins and Freja, and it's the only class I have with either of them" I explain.
"That's great Mara" she responds before she starts eating.
I smile and start eating my food, She made my favorite, meatloaf.
After dinner, I help my mom with dishes, take a shower, finish whatever homework I had left, and read until I have to go to bed.
