Day of the Dragon Riding Test

As the sun started to rise, it cast its long, bright orange rays of light on the people of Wind. The city was just starting to wake-up as it felt the first few rays streamed through their windows, alerting them to the start of a new day. The merchants were starting to stir and go to their various shops. The farmers on the outskirts of the town were getting up to do their daily chores. The white mages were practicing in their church and the fire mages were doing shooting practice on one side of the town, while ice mages were on the other. And last but not least, were the dragon riders, doing dangerous stunts, back flips, and nose dives, while some were just lazily leaning back, letting the morning sun shine on their faces.

In one house, on the outskirts of town, was a white-haired young girl about the age of 16, with blue eyes the color of the sky on a clear day. She was still sleeping, oblivious to the waking of the town, despite her resolve last night to wake up early to get in some dragon riding practice...

Cyanea's Point of View

As the sun was starting to sear my eyes, I threw my eyes open to discover that the sun was already half-way to reaching its peak in the sky. I gasped, remembering my resolve to get-up early and start practicing for the giant Dragon Riding Test this afternoon and ran to my wardrobe, throwing it open and throwing on a pair of white shorts, a blue T-shirt, riding goggles, and a pair of white, running shoes. I was so excited and terrified last night about my Dragon Riding Test (DRT), that I had trouble sleeping. Then I went to my dresser and quickly put my hair into a messy pony-tail, before running out the door and out of the house, shouting that I was leaving and going to practice riding my dragon. Of course I've always had a special connection with my dragon and probably could've tried to wing it (no pun intended), but practice does make perfect and I wasn't taking any chances of failure.

As I dashed through the city, weaving around people, trees, I climbed to the top of Dragon Hill, where most dragons usually stayed to eat Dragon snaps. As I got to the peak, I immediately spotted my snow-white dragon, already alert and pacing around the hill, no doubt waiting for me to do some flying practice. My dragon's name was Thalia and she had beautiful, white glistening scales with a long, slender body, and two feelers flowing from each side of her face and blue eyes to match mine. She sniffed at me in annoyance as I approached her.

"I know, I know, I should've been up by now, but I couldn't sleep last night." I sighed and she just grunted in response as I threw one leg over her side and held on to her scaly neck with my both of my arms.

As she went over to the side of the mountain, I steeled myself for the feeling of falling that would no doubt overwhelm me. It was quite sad really, a dragon rider afraid of heights. But after years of practice, I had slowly gotten over it and trusted Thalia to not let me fall.

"Okay, here we go." I whispered to myself. Then Thalia gracefully jumped over the edge and we fell for a few seconds, me gripping on slightly tighter, and then I could feel her wings snap out and catch a current. Before I knew it, we were flying up in the air, soaring above the city. I sighed in relief and felt a grin playing on my face. A few Kilometers away was the next island in our floating array that we all call a part of the City in the Sky. Everything here was above a thick layer of clouds, blocking our view from bellow. I sometimes wondered about the inhabitants bellow. Wouldn't they be curious about a giant massive surrounding of clouds? What was it like down there? Were there people or monsters? I sighed, as I probably would never get the chance to know. There were certain barriers around our city to keep us "safe and away from others", yeah right, more like a prison if you ask me, though a very large one at that, it was very spacious and contained quite a few islands.

As we approached the island that we were heading towards, I saw the practice set-up that was going to be used this afternoon, for the DRT. As we came closer, I saw that almost the entire Dragon-Riding class was there. It was completely crowded I saw that almost everyone was going through the hopes, suspended in mid-air by none other than our mages, and trying out the obstacle course, with Dragons and Dragon riders either sailing smoothly, or failing completely and bumping into random obstacles. I sighed in frustration and ran my hands through my hair. There was absolutely no room for us on the course. I knew this was going to happen, which is why I wanted to get up early. My dragon snorted at me in a ‘you-should've-woken-up-earlier’ kind of way, and I just sighed, resting my head on Thalia's head, trying to think of a way around this.

I remembered that not everyone was there practicing. Actually, the mayor's son and his friends were not there, and I really hadn't noticed their dragons on the hill either. It was just the usual midnight riders' who slept during the day and kept watch at night. So that meant that they had found another way to either get some practice, or they were just goofing off again. I was inclined to think the later, but really, what choice did I have at this point? I could try and ask my friend and mage-in-training, Evan, to help create a course like this one; however, he was busy studying for his test today, and knowing him, he probably waited to the last minute. I mentioned this to Thalia, and she made a shrugging motion, or what was meant to be a shrugging motion. Mayor's son and friends it was.

“Alright, let’s go see if we can find them.” I said.

Hey peeps!! :D

This story was sitting in my 'create' section for a year now, so I don't know where I was heading with this.... *shrug* It's just for fun anyways. The person I dedicated this to actually inspired me to continue writing! She writes so much, even though she gets little votes. Thank you glambert96!

Picture to the right is what I think Cyanea looks like. Do you guys think I should change the name? It's really hard to remember, though I think I chose it 'cause of the meaning *shrug*. It means 'eyes as blue as the sea'...... yah. So any sugestions please?
