harley's phone buzzed for the thousandth time and eventually woke her from a peaceful nap. at first she responded by pushing her phone further away from her, and as it kept notifying her about activity on her social media, she eventually flipped over to the other side of the bed as she was not emotionally ready for the day to begin. she had an unbearably long shift at the pub last night and seeing as it was her day off today, she intended on sleeping in and ordering food. it was unlikely she'd end up going out with her friends, seeing as it was a monday. one of the cons of working at a pub; her weekends were rarely free, especially seeing as she worked at an understaffed location. but, she made the best of it.
a loud groan of annoyance left harley as her phone vibrated far too frequently. was someone trying to reach her? no one usually called her at this time of day, particularly on a monday when most of her friends friends were at work. as she picked up her phone, the expression on her face shifted from tiredness to utter confusion at the sight of the notifications on her phone. they were all from instagram, and her phone kept vibrating in her hands as a new one kept popping up. her profile was public but she barely had any followers, and they weren't very active in the first place. harley would post on her instagram because she liked it, not because she was trying to grow a following, though she did sometimes envy instagram models who got to live more luxurious lives rather than working a regular physically demanding job.

6 missed calls from emily<3
emily: PICK UP YOUR PHONE BITCHASDF
emily: HAARRLEEEEYYY
emily: WHAT IS GOING ON
harley's eyes watched as the first notification kept shifting and glitching before her eyes, indicating numerous likes each second. was she in a dream? she was definitely still dreaming and this was all part of it. she recalled her last post; she was proud of it. her best friend emily had taken that picture of her while they were in a restaurant in florence last week. harley's job wasn't the best but it paid enough to let her save enough money to afford the occasional vacation, her recent trip to italy being one of them. was the picture that special though?
deciding to bite the bullet, she clicked on the notification and after her phone verified her face ID, she was taken to her recent post. she froze at the number of likes and comments, and as she pulled the page down with her finger to refresh, the number changed. it wasn't a drastic difference, but she was definitely not used to it.
"no fuckin way." she muttered to herself as she scrolled through the comments, a few of the usernames catching her name. how had her account reached these people in the first place? she had so many questions and absolutely no answers. harley barely kept up with celebrity news and anything that would happen on social media, but she knew one special person that kept up with absolutely everything.
"emily, what the fuck happened?" harley questioned as she stared at the familiar face on the screen, in desperate need of a concrete answer. this made no sense to her.
"you better not forget about me now that you're famous." emily immediately went on to tease her best friend, who responded with an eye roll. "okay, okay, you blew up on tiktok. your recent gained a little more traction than usual but it wasn't until an account posted you on tiktok that everyone went absolutely fucking mental."
"what? who posted me on tiktok?"
"like you know those random edits where they just put pictures of a bunch of pretty girls with an audio over it?"
"em, i dont use tiktok."
"christs sake, anyway i read that it started like that."
"i- what do you mean you read it?"
"obviously everyone is posting about it and all!" emily interjected. "everyone's stunned over your looks, harley."

even after hours of sitting at home, harley had barely processed the entire situation. she could hardly believe something like this was happening to her. she remembered the whole cindy kimberly and justin bieber situation from years back, but obviously that was a bigger deal and it seemed like harley was going popular in the uk rather than the entire world. she eventually settled on downloading tiktok, purely out of curiosity, and it wasn't long before the algorithm started flooding her page with her own face. before long she had exited out of the app, seeing as she was a little thrown off by seeing herself in edits. her mind drifted off and she began to wonder how this could potentially change her life. was she going to get her 15 minutes of fame and then be forgotten next week, or was this really going to change the course of her life? the idea brought both excitement as well as anxiety.
the answer was given to her within the next day. after giving in and accepting that she'd have to eventually open her direct messages, she was surprised by how many brand deals she was being offered. from an objective point of view, it made sense; her popularity was currently at its height, and she was being talked about all over social media for being an overnight sensation, but harley could still hardly believe it was happening to her of all people. it would take time to get used to it, but she could feel that her life was changing for the better.
