Dad parked outside a red residence and turned to me with a tired smile. "Got everything you need, pumpkin?"
I nodded and took off my headphones. "I think so. But Bebe said she'll lend me whatever I might need."
He ruffled my hair and kissed my forehead. "Have fun."
I got out with my bag and waved goodbye before he drove away. I skipped to the house, whose porch lit up the moment I stepped on it. With no doorbell in sight, I knocked and waited for someone to open.
Voices erupted from inside, and in seconds the lock clicked, and the entrance opened. Bebe stood in front of me in what I presumed was her pajamas with a wide grin and pulled me in before I could greet her. She pushed me through the living room to the kitchen where Red, Wendy, and Sophie hovered over the counter giggling.
Bebe squeezed my shoulders. "Guess who's here!"
The girls turned to us with smirks on their faces and revealed a bowl with a dark substance in it. "Hi (Y/n)!"
"What are you doing?" I asked with a chuckle.
Sophie showed me an empty and crumpled flour packet. "We're making a cake! Wanna join?"
"Sure!" I set my bag next to the table and joined in the fun. Red held a mixer, splashing what I presumed was chocolate around the room. Sophie and I weighed the products using a weighing scale that randomly flicked on and off even after changing the batteries. Wendy turned on the oven and helped Bebe clean the kitchen in real-time. We switched jobs a couple of times when other girls arrived and in about an hour, the cake was baked and ready to eat.
"Great job, ladies!" Bebe shoved another bite into her mouth. "What do you want to do next?"
We pondered in silence, broken only by the sounds of our chewing.
"Nails? I haven't done mine in a while," Heidi proposed.
We nodded with grins. Red and Wendy packed our plates into the dishwasher and we moved to Bebe's room. She pulled out a box full of nail polish flasks and invited us to pick whatever colors we liked.
My eyes scanned the bottles before one caught my attention. I lifted a dark, blood-red container to my eyes so I could take a closer look.
"I'll do yours." Bebe swiftly sneaked her arm around my shoulder and guided me to her bed. She lay out a set comprising oils, cuticle remover, and other nail care substances, as well as scissors and nail clippers.
I rolled up my sleeve. "Thanks! I can try doing yours next, but I'm not sure how they'll turn out."
She waved her hand dismissively. "Don't be shy. We could always fix it later."
"Okay."
Before we started, someone pointed out that most of us weren't in our pajamas yet. So I rushed to the bathroom and quickly changed into a T-shirt and sweatpants I had hidden at the bottom of my bag. When I got back, most girls were preparing their nails already. I skipped to Bebe and plopped next to her onto the soft mattress.
She grabbed my hand and cleaned my nails just in case I had any leftover color on. When she got to my pinky, her finger brushed against the thin chain on my wrist. She lifted her head a little to peek at it. "Huh, that kinda looks like my bracelet," she smiled.
"Oh... em..." I bit my lip. My finger unwittingly tapped my knee. "It might be."
She glanced up again. This time her eyes locked on mine with an emotion I couldn't decipher. "How so?"
I turned away. Despite it only lasting a few seconds, the eye contact got too intense for me. I dug myself a hole and had no choice but to be honest. "Kyle found it in the Party House like two weeks ago."
