Hiding amongst humans is difficult. Mostly because we left with nothing but gray jumpsuits, and some money we stole from the wallets of the scientists. Currency. How primitive. Why? Because money mostly brought greed and gambling and corruption. Nothing good. Yes, donating money meant you were helping some far off people in need, but why not do it yourself instead of paying someone to help for you? See what I mean? We discovered the laboratory we had been born in was deep beneath a massive city. Hiding in it wasn't as difficult as you'd think, but if we were to get things to help us survive, we'd need identities. Thankfully, the scientists had picked "codenames" for us, which we used as our first names. My name was Gene, derived from genio, the Spanish word for temper. Everyone else's names had similar roots. There was one girl, Clementine, and two other boys, Rodey and Ren. The second girl had not survived the uplink either, she hadn't made it out of her cylinder. The other boy, well, you know what happened to him.
According to the world, we didn't exist. Like typical humans, they simply buried the whole incident of us, pretending like it never happened. We knew, of course, The Company, we called them, knew we were out and about and would be no doubt searching for us. But we were smarter, faster, and stronger than any human on earth. We could defeat anyone they threw at us.
Despite our enhanced metabolism, we couldn't go forever without food. We had gone more than a week without either food or water, and avoiding the problem was no longer working. We had only spent some money on a new set of clothes, and we were down to a couple thousand in bills.
We were hanging out in a corridor, when Ren returned to us holding a wallet, and had bruises on his knuckles.
"What happened?" I asked, noticing his knuckles.
"I knew we couldn't go forever with this much money, so I found a solution." He held up a wallet and showed a credit card.
"Where did you get this?" Clementine asked, taking the credit card and inspecting it.
"A guy...." He responded shyly.
"A guy?" I retorted. "Where did you get this?" I asked again.
Ren sagged his head and sighed. "I stole it! Okay! These guys came up to me in the corridor, and they started hurting me, so I hurt them back! I saw that they had a ton of money and stuff on them, so I took it."
We all stared at each other. Then we began yelling. Blaming others for the position we were in, saying we didn't need the money, or we did. Rodey however, said nothing. For most of our time together, he had said little, never participating in conversation, just sitting there, listening. He always say back and was quiet, we didn't even know what his super human ability was.
One thing each of us were beginning to learn was each other's super human ability. Ren's, we had discovered, was super strength. This was actually pretty ironic, as his appearance suggested a weak and helpless recluse. Mine was the electrical whips that shoot from my fingertips, and Clementines was teleporting herself to anywhere she could see. But Rodey's, was still unknown.
As we argued, and he sat there, he eventually rose to his feet and shouted over our yelling, "Stop!!"
We all stared at him, surprised at his outburst. He was still standing, and said, "We can't go on like this! Living in dark corridors, being assaulted, stealing!"
Everyone sagged their heads in shame.
"Why do we live?" He asked, waiting for an answer.
"Why do we live?" He asked again.
"I don't know." Ren answered.
"I do." I answered. "We live because humans created us! They thought they could engineer humans! And we are what we got."
"I know that!" Rodey responded. "But what do we do now! We shouldn't even exist! We are always hiding! But what do we do now! I don't want to live in a hole my entire life! I want a purpose!"
We again found ourselves standing around silently. No one could answer his question, as we didn't know what we were to do other than run away from the company. Then, Clementine spoke up.
"We could learn more." she said. "We seem to have a lot of questions, and many of them can be answered with information The Company has. Are there more of us? Why did they make us? What was our purpose?"
We all agreed with her, and found our purpose. Our purpose was to find our purpose! How funny. We finally decided to leave our corridor, and head out into the world. The world was a gruesome place. Humans shooting each other in dark alleyways, doing illegal things behind the law's back,
Destroying each other verbally. We were fairly safe due to our power and superior knowledge, but these things still taught us a lot.
I had taught the others to hate humans, and these events were only supporting my cause. Using our newfound wealth, we purchased food, and transportation out of the city. We couldn't use public transport, with fear of someone asking for our personal information, something we didn't have. So, we found an old van that was within our budget, and used the remaining money to buy gas. After loading up with what little belongings we had, we found an atlas, and began to head out. We had found some information at the laboratory we were born in that suggested the last location of the suited man who got away. Perhaps it was a good thing I let him go, because now we knew where to go first.
We each took turns driving, and it took some time to get used to the vehicle. We may have held the information on how to drive, but that didn't mean we were good at it. We also made sure to follow street rules, as if a police officer pulled us over and asked us for a license, we'd be in trouble.
Boy, humans sure had a lot of rules.
After a while of driving, we Began to feel like we were getting closer to our destination. All of a sudden, a car pulled up beside us, and a voice blared trough a megaphone, "get out of the vehicle now." We thought it was a police car, but the vehicle was too banged up to be a police car, and the passengers too rough looking.
"I'll only ask this one more time- pull your vehicle to the side and exit it." I had to think fast, as it couldn't be good. Then I got an idea. I had Ren switch places with me at the wheel, and I got into the back of the van. The engine of our van was in the back of it, and so I climbed to the back. I summoned the electrical tentacles from my fingertips and had them wrap around the engine. Several sparks flew. I yelled back into the drivers seat, "Step on it, Ren!" He slammed all of his energy into the gas pedal, and I drained my energy into the engine. The speedometer shot up, and we quickly overtook the car, catching the driver by surprise. He tried to accelerate and catch up with us, but we sped away, somehow faster than their vehicle. However, we Began running into problems. The tires on the van began to sizzle, and layers of rubber was slowly burning off, thinning the tires by the minute. As soon as I saw one beginning to burst, I yelled, "Hold on!"
The tires then gave way, sending the entire van tumbling forwards. Due to the speed we were traveling at, the van tumbled forwards multiple times, knocking us around the van. Eventually, the van crashed into an oncoming car, sending us flying into the air, and landing with a smash. Smoke filled the cabin, but began leaking through holes in the van. While worming our way out of the wreckage, we saw the pursing car had parked beside our wrecked van and were now circling us like hawks.
"We found out you're the ones who killed my friends." The man who clearly was the one in charge said.
"We're here to return the favor."
Several of the men went up to the few of us on the ground, and began kicking us. Normally it wouldn't hurt that much, but because of being smashed into the side of a car at 150 miles per hour had pretty much knocked the wind out of us, we didn't stand a chance. Rodey stood from a distance and saw us being beat up. Then, I saw it.
His eyes went dark, his arms tensed, and a tear dropped from his face. He looked up at the men, then he let out a scream. The men stopped kicking and their hands flew to their ears as they fell to their knees. Rodeys hands shot forwards, and his fingers began rapidly moving. One of the men's body began slowly lifting off the ground, black marks of pure dark energy began clawing at his throat and face. His hands moved from his ears to his neck, his legs wiggling about frantically. After his body ascended several feet off the ground, Rodey's hands shot to the right, and the mans body flew into the side of his car, snapping his neck. The other men, shocked, began to run, but Rodey was too quick. His fingers began twitching again, and all the fleeing men were lifted off the ground, and strangled by Rodey's energy. After the final men were dead, Rodey crumbled to his knees and began sobbing. The darkness had left his eyes almost as quickly as it came
"What have I done?" He exclaimed through his crying.
Clementine and Ren ran to his side, and tried comforting him. I just lay limp, propped up against our wrecked van. I coughed into my hand, and then I saw blood. My blood. My skin was torn up from vehicle shrapnel, and my arms were bruised from shielding the kicking. Humans. Such savages.
What purpose do humans have? I thought to myself as we loaded ourselves into the cars of the dead men. They are born, they live, they go to work, live a simple life, get into some trouble along the way, and die. All they have done is extended the miserable life of humanity, nothing more. And what about people like the savages that tried to kill us? They are simply gnawing away at the progress of those other humans trying to live their lives. No purpose, just a silly fantasy designed to keep you going. What a miserable existence.
