c
hapter one, dead girl walking
Nora woke up from the warm sun shining upon her. The girl felt the hot sweat running down her face. She sat up from her spot. She was situated on one of the prison's roofs. How did she end up there? Good question.
A number of days ago, she was traveling through a big forest, desperately in need of a shelter. You will probably ask why, so let me fill you in, on the events that occured a few nights ago.
Nora was tired. Tired from walking. Tired from running. Tired from hiding. Tired from ending the 'life' of the so called monsters. Just tired of existing.
She felt exhausted. She felt like a dead girl walking. Like she was becoming one of them. Her body was begging for a break. It was begging her to lay down, sleep, without worries. Without waking up every few hours because of nightmares, because she thought she heard something, felt something, felt someone.
She kept on walking though. She kept on trying, but that's the problem, she was always trying. She let herself slip. She kneeled down and leaned her back against a big oak tree. She touched her ankle, which had been hurting her for days. She wouldn't be able to tolerate it much longer. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to have a little peace.
She took out her pocket knife and fidgeted with it, trying to calm herself down. Rather crazy thoughts raced through her mind. What if she ended her misery...? What if... What if... What if... What if..?
She snapped out of her craziness and cursed herself for thinking that way, even the slightest. Yes, she was physically and mentally drained, but who knows, maybe she'll find peace. Maybe she won't be alone, all of her life. Maybe she'll be okay.
So she kept on walking. She was trying to get out of the forest. After hours, and hours of dragging herself, she saw an open horizon. She looked over and saw a big fence around a gray, stone cold building, which she made out to be a prison. She ran down the hill and walked towards the fence.
She still didn't give up. She was desperately searching for an opening, at any of the fences. She couldn't find anything. She looked up at the fence, and a crazy thought crossed her mind. She could climb. The power was down, for almost a year now. She would be fine. Hopefully.
"Okay." She breathed out. She tightened her bag around her shoulders. A rifle was also hanging from the upper part of her body, as her axe was stored in her belt. She looked up one last time before raising her foot and starting to climb the fence. Her hands were gripping on for dear life.
She got to the hardest part. She got to the top. She raised her leg, hoping not to touch the electric wires. She had finally made it to the top. Half of her body was in, and the other half was out of the fence.
"Fuck my life, why did I do that." Her left leg came over, to the inside part of the fence. She slowly started climbing down. When she reached a certain point, she jumped down. She felt a sharp pain, stinging her ankle. She didn't break anything though, thank God.
Walkers started coming at her. She couldn't fight all of them, they would simply eat her alive. So she ran. She ran as fast as she could, trying to ignore the pain in her ankle. She made it all the way across the field and she came face to face with a ladder, that led up to one of the prison's roofs.
She stretched out her hands and climbed up as fast as she could. When she finally made it up, she lied on the ground in a starfish position for a good seven minutes.
The sun was starting to set, but she wasn't waiting around 'till night fell. She stood up, with the little power she had left and walked. One leg in front of the other. She reached one of the four corners. She crouched down, taking her back off her shoulders, and placing it down, along with her axe and rifle.
She then rested her head on top of the bag. She let her tiredness take over. Her eyelids closed, as she drifted off, to another reality where everything was fine. Where she was okay. Where she didn't have to worry. She hoped that when she would wake up, the world would go back to normal. That this was all some sick, fucked up nightmare.
Nothing was helping. Her ankle was swollen. It started to hurt more and more as the days passed. Her food supplies were limited. At this point she only had a packet of chocolate chip cookies and four apples with her. Which, just became three, as she ate one right now.
She didn't know what to do. She felt like she couldn't even get up. That if she did, she would just fall down. So she stayed there. She just stared at the sky, the sound of the walkers making their way to her ears. The sun was blinding her and she was sweating like crazy, but she stayed there. She stayed there for continuous hours. She didn't bother moving.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The sun grew hotter and hotter. If Nora had to take a guess, she'd say it was about mid June or July. She slightly lifted her upper body, in order to take off her dark red jacket, that was covered in sweat, blood and dirt. That had to be the first time she moved in hours. Everything in her body ached in pain. Especially her right ankle.
The girl's head snapped up, the moment she heard a voice yell nonsense. She never stood up this fast in her entire life. She grabbed a hold of the rifle, that was once laying next to her. In that moment it occurred to her that whoever was down there, could probably see her, so she crouched down and hoped the hadn't noticed her.
She crawled to the end of the roof and placed her rifle down. She then proceeded to look, through it's scope. When she did, she caught a glimpse of multiple people. Every single one of them, accompanied by a gun. She didn't pay much attention to their appearance. She just hoped and pleaded that they would not be psychos, and that they'd be kind enough to help her and care for her.
But she wasn't going to reveal herself yet. She sat there, for endless hours, observing them. Taking note of every single move they made. She hadn't realized, but night time had arrived. She felt more exhausted than before. Her neck and back now, hurting as well, from the way she was sitting.
She crawled back to her so called 'bed' and repeated last night's routine. Although this time, she fell asleep with her axe laying in her hands. You can never be too careful.
