The sound of digital beeps fills the room and occupies your mind as you stir in your sleep, the beeps make it hard to sleep and eventually you give in and open your eyes, ‘a hospital bed..’.
Faint snores can also be heard amongst the beeps, looking to your side you notice some kind of furred animal or creature, you can't remember how the two of you met but they refused to leave your side even now as you lay powerless in your lone bed in the somewhat empty room. You couldn’t help but have a familiar feeling of dread as you looked at the creature, like something was…..off but you couldn’t tell exactly what it was. Shuffling can be heard next to the bed followed by a yawn ‘ they’re awake ‘ you thought to yourself and slowly turn your head to face the creature, you never actually figured out what exactly it was but you did know that it purred and meowed plus it preferred to go by the name Kat so you just assumed that’s what it was, though it hated when you called it that which made you laugh every now and then.
“How are you feeling sis?”
‘Oh yea…’ you thought. They liked to refer to you as their sister which made sense, the two of you became inseparable since the day you met, you had no one but each other till you met a man called Bomby who, as his name suggests, was some form of anthropomorphic bomb who claimed two of you, you considered him like an uncle.
“...ti..red..”
You both sat there in silence for a while, possibly to give you time to be more awake so you can figure out what to do as you don’t seem to be getting a change of scenery anytime soon. Not too long after, you notice something is off with them, black splotches start to speckle all over their usual light-gray fur and you watch as their face turns to a panicked look.
"I-I'll be right back"
"Wait where are you going?-"
But before you could get an answer they burst through the door and ran down the hallway, leaving you alone once again only accompanied by the digital beeps of your heart monitor as you drift back to sleep. Awoken by a sharp pain in your stomach and a rush of adrenaline flowing through your body you frantically look around as your eyes rest on a figure that resembles your companion, Kat, though something is terribly wrong, their former grey fur is a pitch black and its eyes are nothing but white voids that stare directly into your soul, you try to escape but the pain in your stomach worsens as it speaks to you "why run? We have plenty of work to do, Ruby". You knew you were physically incapable of fully embracing death but something about this…..thing…..it made you fear for your life as if you were like the mortals littered around this hospital, sure you were here amongst them but even the immortal need medical attention for severe enough wounds.
"What do you want..?"
"I simply need your services"
Services? You weren't some cheap tool for hire, why would HE need services from someone stuck in some stupid hospital bed anyway?
"I know what you're thinking 'what can I possibly do? I'm stuck in this bed' well I have quite the offer for you my dear"
"An….offer..?"
This intrigued you, you barely had others offer you things as you normally did the offering, it seemed like a new change of pace.
"What type of offer..?"
"Its simple really, you free me from this fleabag of a host and I'll reward you with being my assistant, anything you could want can be yours as long as you listen carefully and do EXACTLY as I say"
You couldn't see it but you could feel the grin on his face 'anything I want…' you thought, a fresh start, a chance to do things right.
"I'll…I'll do it.."
The no visible grin grew bigger as he handed you a slip of paper.
"You must read this exactly as it is, not cuts, no hesitations, got it?"
You nod as you start to read the incantation carefully to make sure everything is exact, laughter comes from the figure as he is removed from his host which lays on the floor tiredly and limp.
"So…what do I do now..?"
The black-furred stares down at you with that damn grin again.
"It's quite simple dear, I just need you to do some tasks, trials if you will, to make sure you are a loyal ally"
With a snap of his fingers the two of you are brought to a familiar building 'home..' you thought, you got so happy, you could see your uncle again! Looking around you find him in the kitchen, perhaps making his famous waffles, as you are about to run up to him for a hug, a clawed hand rests on your shoulder preventing you from doing so. Turning to the figure in confusion he just stares back at you with a calm expression.
"Kill him."
"Wh…what..?"
You feel sick to the stomach, 'kill uncle!? Is this guy nuts!?' Bomby provided you with everything! A house, food, loving care, everything that you thought made a good family, everything you never had and finally received.
"Kill him. Prove you're worthy enough to be be my assistant and in return you'll be rewarded handsomely"
"But…I can't kill uncle.."
Your response seemed to upset the figure as it gave you a small glare which quickly softened into a calm expression.
"Ruby, I know what's best for you, I know more about you than this 'thing' does, I know what's best, I know what you're worth, I know what you deserve."
'What I….deserve..' What DID you deserve? All your life you've been pushed around, degraded, disregarded, no one took you seriously and frankly no one seemed to care except for…..the creature. This feeling? What is it? Something you've yearned for for too long, a feeling of being wanted and recognized, the feeling of being needed, finally you felt important, yea, yea! He fills you with pride and self-respect 'you deserve this, you've waited too long!' Before you knew it you slowly made your way towards the bomb-headed man as he turned around in shock.
"Ruby!? You're out of the hospital early!"
You just smile as you gradually approach him 'you deserve this, he knows your worth'. Both of you embrace each other as he starts to pull away and smile at you, this smile swiftly turns into a look of fear and pain as he slowly looks down to his abdomen. All you do is smile as you twist the knife you concealed in your sleeve deeper into his wound, tears rushing to his eyes and rolling down his metallic face as he stares in disbelief, the figure in the background smiling at this, seemingly amused. Carefully retracting your weapon you look directly into his tearful eyes and with one swift movement he's on previously well-cleaned floor, you stare at where he landed with a twinge of guilt but it's soon smothered in a big sense of pride as you hear soft footsteps followed by slow rhythmic claps as the creature approaches from behind.
"I knew you could do it, although a little sloppy."
You felt a familiar feeling of disappointment in that sentence.
“We can work on that later, we have plenty more work to do.”
“We’re not done?”
That grin. Always with that smug grin, full of superiority.
“Far from done my dear, this was merely the first step, I need your help with much bigger and more important matters.”
‘Need’ is a word you were barely associated with, you were NEEDED, it felt so foreign, it felt good.
“Can I trust you to do that?”
Another foreign word, it gave the same feeling. Nodding with a big grin of your own on your face the creature wraps a protective arm around your shoulder and chuckles.
"I have a good feeling about you, you're perfect."
You felt every ounce of regret leave you in that moment, you were finally wanted.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
