Avery didn't have a good relationship with her mother after her father death and when her mother got remarried soon after her father death not even a year later to an abusive man. Avery have a normal decent relationship with her younger brother Sean Hotchner who is two in a half years younger than her and she is extremely protective of and try her best to look out for. Avery is extremely close with the Brooks family. Avery joined the BAU two years a few months before Morgan. Both Gideon and Rossi were her mentors and are like father's figures to her. Six month ago Avery became the BAU new Unit Chief since Gideon stepped down and recommended her to take his position.
