The sun was shining brightly today, and there were very few clouds in the sky. It was a perfect day for children to go out and play without a care in the world.
A young boy wearing a striped shirt was among the giggling children in the playground. He was sitting on a concrete ledge hitting his shoes occasionally at the hard surface.
He didn't utter a word as he watched the other children play. He never spoke much really, so he didn't have many friends. He had his toy bear with him though, and that was plenty of company, for him at least.
"Norman."
The boy heard a gentle voice utter his name in a whisper. He didn't respond to it though, or bother to look around to see who had called him.
"Let's play together."
Norman thought then shook his head as a response to the voice.
"Why not?." The voice inquired.
He silently pointed towards the other children.
"Ah, I didn't realise their were other children around, thank you for telling me." The voice said in a grateful way.
"I'll wait till you're alone then."
The voice stopped speaking after that.
Norman had at least one real friend, and that was the voice.
He began to drift off into his own world, and stayed in there till his mom called him so they could go home.
"Did you have fun today?" His mother asked.
He nodded.
"That's good." His mother responded with a smile.
At first she was worried, her son didn't talk much nor did he have any friends but she soon realised he was happy despite all that. He seems particularly happy with playing by himself.
Her thoughts wondered on what she should make for dinner, soon they were both home and Norman went straight to his room.
"Mr Shadow?" He whispered to himself.
"Yes Norman, I'm here." The voice replied.
"I'm ready to play now." He said with a smile on his face.
"Alright, I'll come out so we can play."
Something came out of Norman's shadow, a tall person was infront of him now, completely pitch black except for the eyes. They were all white.
"What shall we play?" Shadow inquired.
The two began to play, they had hours of fun till the sun was setting. Norman felt like he couldn't stop smiling, they were interrupted though.
His mother came in and Mr Shadow went away into Norman's shadow.
"It's bed time sweetie."
Norman nodded to his mom, to show that he understood her.
She smiled at him
"Sweet dreams honey." She said to him before gently closing the door.
Norman heard the footsteps slowly leaving from his door.
"Well you heard your mother, time for bed." The voice said in a soothing voice.
Norman nodded, he got changed into his soft night time clothes and headed to his bed.
He tucked himself in, he didn't close his eyes though.
"Want me to sing you a lullaby?" The voice asked.
"Yes please....." Norman's voice was so quiet, like the wind could just easily snatch it away and make sure it was never heard again.
That was a terrifying thought.
"Ok." The voice said.
He began to sing, his voice so pleasing and soothing to listen to, it was sweeter than sugar, and you could get lost in it for all of eternity and never come out.
Norman slowly drifted off to slumber, nothing but sweet dreams laid ahead of him.
