I sat in my last class bored out of my mind when there was a knock on the classroom door. "Your volunteers are here! Please be nice to them." Mrs. W told us. She opened the door and 15 students walked in. Emily whistled and whispered to me, "Ooo, that one's cute!" She pointed to a boy with black hair and brown eyes. He had on a long black and white striped shirt and a black T-shirt with a white cat on it. We made eye contact and I blushed. "Someone has a crush." Emily whispered. I elbowed her in the shoulder and tried to pay attention to the teacher talking to us. She decided to "assign" people to help certain people. My classmate Charlie got a girl named Peggy to help her get places because she was blind, Emily got a girl named Martha to help carry her stuff (the teacher originally had a different student get her stuff to and from her locker.), a boy named Jesse was assigned a girl named Sophie. Finally, she got to me. Mrs. W must have seen me and Emily whispering about the boy, because she told me his name was Asher and he would help me get things, move around smaller hallways and if my parents signed a paper, help me go to the store or go to friends houses. He looked at me, gave me a "he doesn't look the worst" look and walked over. My heart was beating so fast when Asher leaned on the desk. "Hey, I'm uhh... I'm Leo." I said, hoping I wasn't blushing. "So... why doesn't your leg work?" He asked. I shifted in my seat. "Diabetic neuropathy. I always hope it'll go away, but I'm starting to lose hope." I tell Asher. He patted my shoulder and looked me in the eyes. It was very threatening. "Welp, I have to help you until you graduate, so stop staring at me like that." I looked away from him and looked at Emily for help. She just shook her head and grinned. I looked at him again and kicked him in the shin. He scowled at me and slapped me hard across the face. "Excuse me, Asher! Apologize right now! That is unacceptable!" Mrs. W and Asher's teacher looked so mad. I rubbed my cheek and glared. "Sorry." He muttered. Saved be the bell ringing, I asked him to help me to get from my chair to my wheelchair. I left him in the classroom and went to my locker. He came running after me and put his hand on my arm. "Dude, how on earth are you so fast?" He asked. I ignored him and got my backpack. I noticed that it was raining outside and I hadn't brought a jacket or umbrella, and mom or dad couldn't pick me up. The bus obviously wasn't available for me. "Need help getting home?" He asked. "No, in fact I'm going myself. I would run, but..." he cut me off and said "I'm walking home with you and not giving you my jacket, little princess." I scowled at him. "I am not a princess! I'm a boy, stupid!" I told him. "Couldn't tell with your pink dear earrings." I pulled hair over my ears and blushed. "I don't care anyway. A T-shirt is like a winter coat to me." I told him. He rolled his eyes and waited for me to close my locker. I went off without him and went outside. He trailed next to me as I got drenched with the rain, but I didn't care. Being dry and on time to my house was worse then dry and on time. After a bit, he looked down at me and flicked the side of my head. It made me jump and I glared at him. We kept going until every part of me was soaking wet. He sighed and wrapped his jacket around my shoulders and didn't saw anything until I reached my house. The rain had soften up by then. I used my house key to open the door and received screaming from my dad. I told Asher to go home and he left with his jacket. He told me to just go to bed and he'd dry my chair. I stood up with my not-so-strong left leg and limped over to my room and sat on my bed. I looked in my drawers and noticed none of my clothes had been washed since our washer broke. I laid on my bed with only a sheet since dad spilled something on my blanket and pillow while in my room. We didn't have any extras. I slept in wet, soggy clothes that night. (Spoiler alert, it was very uncomfortable.)
