Heartland : Loss and Love

Part 1 - The Aftermath

        It was a beautiful day in Alberta Canada. I was getting ready to do my last rodeo of the 

season. He gave me a good luck kiss.  "You got this babe," said Sam. "I know," I said. I kissed 

him close. "ready," asked Tim. Dad was there he was my coach. "Yes," I said. I was getting up 

into the chute. The crowd was cheering. I got onto the horse. I grabbed the rope. I put my hand 

up and shook my head. The gate opened and the horse started bucking. This one a  hard one.

"Keep going," yelled Tim. "10 seconds," said The announcer. That is when something bad 

happened. The horse stood up on his hind legs. He got spooked by something. I fell off and 

when I did I hit my head and hurt my back. I was out. The horses ran off. "Lexi," yelled Tim. 

He and a couple guys came running over. The crowd went quiet. This was bad. Dad bent down

next to me. "Lexi hey wake up," said Tim. "Paramedics," someone yelled. They came running 

over to me. "Lets get a C- collar on her," they said. They put it on. "Now a backboard and start 

a Iv," Dad was holding my hand. "Hang in there ok," said Tim. They put the backboard under 

me. "Now they stretcher ok ready lift," they lifted me up and got me on the stretcher. One of 

the paramedics put a bandage around my head. "Let go Med 1 requesting Air med possible 

head trauma and spinal patient," said The Emt. "10-4 enroute," 

      They got to the clearing where the helicopter was gonna medic vac me out. Sam came 

running over to me. "Hey its ok they are taking care of her," said Tim. "it is bad," said Sam. They

intubated me. "it is but she is tough," said Tim. Jack and Amy and Lou and Peter came running

over. "dad," said Amy. He hugged them. "Its gonna be ok," said Tim. They flew me to Calgary 

hospital. [ Calgary hospital ] it was later in the day. I was in the ICU. Still hooked up to a lot of 

machines. They brought Sam back. He walked into my room. He sat down in the chair and he 

grabbed my hand "Hey I am here Lexi," said Sam. The doctor came in and told him the news. 

We don't know until I wake up about the damage. "stay with me," said Sam. He kisses my hand. 

(2 days later) I was still not awake. Sam had been by my side since the accident. The door slid 

opened. It was Tim. He was holding flowers. He saw Sam asleep in the chair. "Sam," said Tim. 

He wakes up. "Is she awake," said Sam. "Not yet," said Tim. He put the flowers down. Sam 

wiped his face. "Have you been home yet," asked Tim. "No," he said. "Go home and get some 

rest I stay with her," said Tim. "You sure," asked Sam. "Go," said Tim. Sam kissed me on the head.

He leaves. Tim sits down. He grabs my hand. "Come on honey keep fighting," said Tim. 

[ Coma Dream ] 

      I was walking around a white plan room. "Hello," I said. "Over here," someone said. I turned 

around. "Where am I," I asked. "Your not dead yet," the voice said. I turned around and there 

was two chairs. "come sit," she said. I walked over to the chair and sat down. This figure 

appeared and I knew who this was. Tears started to from. "Mom," I said. "Hello Alexis," she 

said. She came and sat down. "Am I dead," I asked. "No," she said. She gave me a hug. I 

missed her so much. "I don't know what happened," I asked. "You were in a rodeo accident," 

she said. She smirked. "Sam," I said. "you got yourself a good man there," she said. I wiped my 

eyes. "Darling its ok but you can't stay here," she said. "why not," I said. She put her hand on 

my stomach. "Go back to your daughter and your husband," she said. I was confused for a 

minute. "wait what," I asked. "Your pregnant Lexi," She said. I was in complete shock. I didn't 

know. "what," I said. "I know but  you have to go back now dear," she said. "I love you," I said

She gave me a hug. "I am proud of you Lexi," she said. 

      Back in the real world. Dad was looking at me. The monitors started going off. The nurse 

came in and took out the tube. "what is going on," asked Tim. "She is waking up," said Jane. 

She went and got the doctor. They put a oxygen mask on me. Dad was holding my hand. I 

opened my eyes. "Dad," I stuttered. "Hey your ok," said Tim. He put his hand on my head. The

doctor came in. "Look who is awake," said Smith. "I am so glad," said Tim. He walked over to 

me. "How do you feel," asked Smith. "I am ok I think hurts,"  I said. "can you feel this," he said. 

He touches my feet. "no," I said. "how about this," he said. I moved my left foot. "Yes," I said. Dad 

looked at the doctor. "That is totally normal," said Smith. "it is," said Tim. "yeah its gonna be a 

hard road for her but she be back to her old self," said Smith. The nurse came back in. She 

handed Smith the paperwork.  "Interesting,"  he said.  "What is it," asked Tim. Smith looked at 

me.  "Your pregnant,"  said Smith. Dad was taken back. He looked back at me. I was still dazed 

and out of it.  "What,"  said Tim.  "3 weeks pretty early,"  said Smith. Him and Dad went out in 

the hallway and continued the conversation.
