Every night, as she lays in bed, she wonders if it's worth it. Moving across the world to study in Germany. Learning an entirely new language and parting with her friends at home, only to live with a family that doesn't care if she's dead or alive. Well, it had been a year, and her freshman term of college was over. It was too late now, so it would have to be worth it.The family housing her during her college years claimed they would "treat her as their own". But, as the weeks went on, she discovered that this was a farse. They only allowed her to shower last, that way the rest of the family could have the warm water. The same rules applied to meals, she could have leftovers, but if she was hungry, she would walk to the store for herself. No birthday celebrations, no Christmas festivities. And despite the fact that she was paying them to live in their home, she was still obligated to do all laundry and dishes. But, beyond the cold demeanor of her "foreign exchange parents", the real torment lied with Hildi.
Hildi was y/n's age, and the families only daughter. Having only been accustomed to the only child life, Hildi did not take y/n's arrival well. The first few months, Y/n was a ghost. Like a child, Hildi simply pretended as though Y/n didn't exist.
"Can you turn the music down; I'm trying to sleep" Y/n would ask nicely through the crack in Hildi's door. She rubbed her eyelids, which were weighed down by the weight of exhaustion.
"Do you hear something?" Hildi asked her school friend, "I think there's a ghost."
"A ghost...who speaks German like a toddler", breaking into a fit of laughter at Y/n's expense.
It went on this way for longer than Y/n would like to admit. But months went by, and Y/n could no longer by bullied for her poor German, so Hildi switched to blaming every mistake on Y/n.
"Oh? The house smells like weed? Probably Y/n..."
"I think it was Y/n who broke the coffee machine."
"Y/n clogged the toilet upstairs."
It was torture, but there was little Y/n could do to change it. That's why she was extremely taken aback when on the first day of summer Hildi said,
"Do you want to go to this concert with me..." Hildi wore a blank expression and rolled her eyes, standing at Y/n's bedroom door while she laid on her bed.
"What?" Y/n said, with an indescribable confusion.
"Yeah, It's just...I have the tickets...and like. You know how to drive, so." She wouldn't make eye contact with Y/n.
"So, the catch is me driving. That's it, right?" Y/n was reluctant.
"mhm.."
"Okay" Y/n agreed to go. And Hildi, semi-embarrassed, slipped out of her room, "Wait!" Y/n shouted, "What concert?"
"Tokio Hotel" Hildi shouted back from her own bedroom.
Y/n recognized the name from the posters on Hildi's bedroom walls. And even though she didn't know much about the band or their music, she was beyond excited to go. As the sun set slowly over the city, she grew more and more excited. She spent hours choosing out her favorite outfit, and doing her makeup with perfection, and when the time came to head to the concert, she knocked on Hildi's door.
