A cloudy sky devoid of any sliver of sunlight, giving way to a heavy downpour of rain to the city below.Adding to the already depressing tone of the somber atmosphere that had now gripped Musutafu.
The streets were either filled with craters, or split into several parts in a manner reminiscent to the aftermath of a massive earthquake.
Considering what had just transpired in the city, that would be a massive understatement.
Shattered glasses, desecrated houses, molten metal, burning vehicles, crumbled skyscrapers; all signs of destruction imaginable to both public and private property was evident.
And with that destruction, came a near absence of all human life,as the citizens had either been subjected to one of two fates.
They had either evacuated from the city successfully.
Or they had met their untimely demise during their search for shelter.
Littered across each street was several corpses of the fallen citizens, their numbers rallying up in the hundreds.
Man, Woman, Child, Son, Daughter, Grandfather, Grandmother...
All manner of person had met a cruel end during this tragedy that would shake the nation of Japan to it's very core.
Within the wreckage, kneeling in front of a mountain of corpses, battered and bloodied was an individual who may seem to the average person a boy younger than 18.
But to those who knew of him, he was more than that.
Much more.
Wielder of the most powerful device in the universe, and Earth's greatest hero; The Omnitrix Bearer, Ben Tennyson.
A title that he no longer felt he deserved to bear.
After all, from his perspective, the death and destruction that surrounded him was his fault.
But more regrettably, laying in his arms as she drew her last breath is the one person who he thought would be the last ever person he'd allow to get this hurt.
The one person who he cherished more than anyone else.
Her once stunning auburn hair that she worked so hard to maintain everyday was now ruffled and ruined as it was drenched in blood.
Her blood.
Her eyes of similar color that entranced him every time he looked at them, filled with so much hope, ambition and resolve, was now squinted and weary, almost like as if keeping them open alone was a near insurmountable task.
Her hero costume, once so colorful and filled with so much personality that it genuinely reflected the nature of the one who donned it,was now tattered beyond repair.
Her body which always radiated a strong sense of warmth that naturally gravitated people towards her due to her seemingly pureness of heart, was now running cold, shaking as if about to collapse at any given moment.
The bruises on her face, the gaping wound on her midsection that gushed out blood made the cuts and bruises across Ben's arms and face feel much more insignificant, even though they were just as severe as hers. But he wouldn't see it that way.
After all,he wasn't the one knocking on death's door.
"Ben-kun..." She spoke in a low tone of voice, almost like a whisper. The strain on her lungs and vocal cords was evident, only serving to unnerve him even more.
Tears flowed freely across his cheeks, with droplets of it falling on her face as well.
"I...I kept...my promise..." Suddenly,as if in a trance, Ben would feel, albeit briefly, a sense of warmth wash all over him right from the depths of his heart to his entire body.
